An international trade show is a time-limited commercial exhibition where businesses present products or services and connect with buyers, suppliers, distributors, and other industry participants across national borders. It may be reserved for industry professionals, open to the public, or combine both audiences; the name alone does not determine who may attend.
What makes a trade show international?
“International trade show” is a practical description, not a category with one universal legal threshold. An event may be described as international because it has exhibitors from multiple countries, draws overseas buyers, or serves a market that crosses national borders. To assess a particular event, look for evidence of its participants and stated geographic reach rather than relying on its title.
Terminology also varies: organizers may use “trade show,” “trade fair,” “trade exhibition,” or “expo” for events with overlapping purposes. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) discusses distinctions among fairs, exhibitions, and consumer events while noting that common usage overlaps. Bhutan’s government guideline, as a national example rather than a global rule, describes a trade fair as showcasing products and services and bringing buyers and sellers together for business interaction.

What happens at an international trade show?
Exhibitors display or demonstrate products and services, while attendees explore offerings and make business contacts. Depending on the industry and the complexity of what is being sold, participants may complete transactions at the event, discuss or sign contracts, or use meetings to generate leads for later follow-up.

Trade fairs can also support export promotion, business links across borders, technology transfer, market access, and the exchange of information about goods and services. These are among the objectives described in Bhutan’s government guideline.

- Public or consumer: members of the general public can attend, often to view or purchase products.
- Mixed: the event serves both professional and public audiences, which may attend at different times or on separate days.
UNIDO describes trade fairs as mainly business-to-business (B2B), while trade shows are generally open to the public and may draw company representatives and press; it also discusses consumer and mixed events. The Indonesia Canada Chamber of Commerce and Hong Kong’s Education Bureau likewise distinguish trade-only, consumer, and combined formats. Check the organizer’s current admission rules before making plans.

How is a commercial trade show different from a BIE Expo?
A commercial trade show focuses on business display and interaction between buyers and sellers. The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) uses “International Expo” for a narrower formal category: a non-commercial exhibition lasting more than three weeks and organized under BIE auspices. “World Expo” and “World’s Fair” are not synonyms for an ordinary commercial trade show. Because commercial organizers also use “expo” more loosely, check which event or category they mean.
