A magnetic tape head is the part of a tape machine that transfers information between its electronics and the magnetic coating on moving tape. In recording, it uses an electrical signal to create a magnetic pattern on the tape; in playback, it senses that pattern and turns it back into an electrical signal. An erase head reduces an existing magnetic recording.
How does a magnetic tape head work?
A common head has a coil wound around a ferromagnetic core, with a small gap facing the tape. The core channels magnetic flux, and the gap focuses the field where it interacts with the tape. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History describes a circa-1950 Brush Company recording-playback head as containing “a small, specially-shaped electromagnet designed to produce a focused magnetic field.” Smithsonian collection record
As tape moves past the head, the electrical current in the coil determines the magnetic field and thus the pattern written into the coating. During playback, the changing magnetic flux from the recorded tape induces a corresponding signal in the head’s coil. The machine’s electronics amplify and process that signal to recover the information. The physical principle applies to magnetic recordings of analogue audio as well as coded digital information. Record head
A record head converts a changing electrical signal into a changing magnetic field at the gap. As the tape passes, that field writes a corresponding magnetic pattern into its coating. Society of Broadcast Engineers, “Magnetic Recording”

Playback or reproduce head
A playback head senses the magnetic pattern already on the tape. The changing magnetic flux induces an electrical signal in the coil, which downstream circuitry amplifies and processes. A machine may use a dedicated playback head or combine playback and recording in one head. National Audio Company glossary
Erase head
An erase head reduces or removes an existing recording by applying a high-frequency magnetic field. In the broadcast-engineering description, the field decays as the tape passes the head, leaving the coating demagnetized. Society of Broadcast Engineers, “Magnetic Recording”

Does every tape machine have three separate heads?
No. “Three-head” describes a configuration, not a requirement. Some machines have distinct erase, record, and playback heads; others combine recording and playback in one head. With separate record and playback heads, some machines can monitor the signal from the tape shortly after it is recorded, a capability often called off-tape monitoring. The precise arrangement depends on the machine. Society of Broadcast Engineers, “Magnetic Recording” National Audio Company glossary

It is the transducer at the tape path: the component that couples the machine’s circuitry to the magnetic surface. Its function depends on whether it is erasing, recording, or reproducing. The term describes a role and a location in the machine, not one universal shape or configuration; head geometry and arrangement vary across tape formats and equipment.
