There is no well-supported single winner for the most accurate 3D printer across resin and filament machines. Accuracy depends on the part, the feature being measured, the material and settings, and whether you care about dimensions, surface shape, fine detail, or repeatability. Formlabs publishes specific tolerance figures for its Form 4 under stated test conditions, while a 2025 TechRadar Pro roundup names eight high-precision picks without presenting a shared dimensional-accuracy leaderboard. Those are useful clues, not an apples-to-apples verdict.
What “accurate” means for a 3D printer
A printer can reproduce small details yet still make a part slightly too large or too small. It can also make one copy close to the intended dimensions and produce different results on the next run. Before comparing machines, decide which kind of accuracy matters for the job.
- Dimensional accuracy is how closely measured lengths, holes, or other features match the intended CAD dimensions. A tolerance needs a feature size and measurement method to be meaningful.
- Surface trueness describes how closely the printed surface matches the reference model. A scan-based surface comparison is not the same test as measuring the width of a printed feature.
- Feature resolution concerns how small a detail the machine can reproduce. A small pixel or nozzle width alone does not establish the final part’s dimensional accuracy.
- Repeatability is how consistently the printer produces the same result across multiple copies and print runs. One successful print cannot establish repeatability.
These measures should not be collapsed into one score. A fine-detail miniature, a fitted mechanical component, and a restorative model can demand different kinds of precision.

What the published figures do—and do not—show
Formlabs Form 4 XY tolerance
Formlabs lists the following typical XY tolerance figures for the Form 4. The figures are manufacturer-published, not an independent comparison with other brands or technologies.

| Feature length | Formlabs-listed typical XY tolerance |
|---|---|
| 1–30 mm | ±0.15%, with a lower limit of ±0.02 mm |
| 31–80 mm | ±0.2%, with a lower limit of ±0.06 mm |
| 81–150 mm | ±0.3%, with a lower limit of ±0.15 mm |
Formlabs says these tolerance figures come from one test model printed on three different printers using Grey Resin V5 at a 100 µm layer height, followed by a five-minute post-cure at room temperature. The values are therefore tied to that model, material, layer height, and post-cure process; they should not be read as a guarantee for every geometry or workflow. Formlabs’ printer comparison page provides the manufacturer’s stated figures and test conditions.
Formlabs restorative-model surface results
The same manufacturer comparison reports separate results for restorative models printed with Precision Model Resin: the share of surfaces within specified distances of the CAD model. These figures measure surface deviation, not the XY tolerances in the table above.

Formlabs attributes these surface results to Precision Model Resin. They are manufacturer-reported, model-specific figures, not independent head-to-head measurements against FDM printers or a general ranking of all resin machines. See Formlabs’ comparison and methodology.

What a review roundup can tell you
In a roundup published December 31, 2025, TechRadar Pro named the Creality Hi, Bambu Lab H2D, Creality K2 Plus, Elegoo Centauri Carbon, Bambu Lab H2S, Original Prusa Core One, Bambu Lab P2S, and Bambu Lab H2C among eight printers that stood out in its testing and reviews. The article discusses high-precision machines, but it does not provide a single standardized dimensional-accuracy result across all eight. Its selections are candidates to investigate, not proof of one overall winner. Read the TechRadar Pro roundup.

How to choose the right printer for your job
For fitted functional parts
Focus on the actual dimensions that determine fit: for example, the size of a mating feature or the clearance between two parts. Look for measurements on features near the sizes in your design, and check whether the test reports the relevant axis, material, print orientation, and post-processing. If the source gives only a resolution figure or a general claim of precision, it does not answer how closely your part will fit.
For restorative or other detailed models
Seek a surface comparison against a CAD reference, with the material and finishing process specified. A percentage of surface area within a stated distance of the model answers a different question from an XY tolerance, so compare it only with results that use a similar surface metric and process.

For miniatures and fine details
Assess whether the printer can reproduce the smallest features you need, then check the quality of the final part under the material and orientation you intend to use. Fine feature detail is not, on its own, evidence that a part’s overall dimensions will be correct.

Ask whether a comparison measured several copies rather than one specimen. Repeatability matters when parts need to be interchangeable or when a workflow must reproduce the same dimensions over time. Also check whether the test describes calibration state and print settings; otherwise, it may be difficult to reproduce the result.

A practical checklist for comparing accuracy claims
Before choosing between printers, look for a test report that identifies:
- The metric: dimensional error, surface deviation, feature resolution, repeatability, or a clearly defined combination.
- The measured feature sizes and directions, along with the CAD reference or test model.
- The measurement instrument or scan method and whether measurements were taken before or after post-processing.
- The printer, material, layer height, orientation, slicer profile, and relevant print or curing conditions.
- The number of copies tested and whether results were consistent across them.
- The build volume and material compatibility needed for your actual part.
Then compare like with like. A manufacturer’s test can be useful when its conditions match your intended workflow, but it is not automatically comparable with another manufacturer’s test. Likewise, a reviewer’s overall assessment of print quality is not a substitute for a standardized dimensional dataset.
Is there a single most accurate 3D printer?
Not on the evidence available here. The Form 4 figures are specific manufacturer measurements under stated resin conditions, and the TechRadar Pro list is an editorial selection rather than a shared cross-category dimensional-accuracy test. Neither establishes a universal winner. For a defensible choice, match the measurement to your part, compare results produced under comparable conditions, and give repeatability and material compatibility as much attention as a headline tolerance figure.
