Choose a Prometheus alternative by checking whether it preserves the evidence your team needs to reconstruct an incident—not by starting with a feature list or a “small team” price estimate. First define the metric history, queries, labels, and connections to logs or traces you need; then compare managed and self-managed options against that workload.
What should a small SaaS team require from a metrics backend?
During an incident, a useful metrics backend should help answer concrete questions: When did the symptom begin? Which services or bounded request categories were affected? Did the signal change before, during, or after a deploy? Can the team connect that timeline to relevant logs or traces?
Start with a representative incident window, such as a recent outage or a staged failure. List the dashboards, PromQL queries, recording rules, and alerts used to understand it. Then check whether a candidate can retain and query the necessary history and whether the team can still use its existing workflows. Prometheus compatibility can reduce migration effort, but it does not guarantee that every dashboard, rule, label behavior, or alert will work identically.
- History: Identify how far back the team must look to establish when a symptom began and how it developed.
- Queries and alerts: Test the actual PromQL, dashboards, recording rules, and alerting rules that matter during an incident.
- Signal context: Decide which questions metrics can answer and which require request-level evidence in logs, traces, or events.
- Ownership: Name who will manage retention, backups, access, capacity, and observability incidents.
- Cost behavior: Compare candidates using the same measured ingestion, series profile, retention, query load, region, and support expectations.
This is a workload evaluation, not a claim that one backend has been tested or is the cheapest. “Small SaaS” alone does not establish a comparable price or operating burden.

How can metric labels make incident evidence harder to retain?
Each distinct combination of metric name and labels creates a time series. A label that takes on many values—such as a user ID, session ID, or raw request path—can multiply series as the service grows. More series consume resources and can make ingestion and query behavior harder to predict.
The Prometheus Authors give project guidance to try to keep metric cardinality below 10 in most cases, and to investigate alternatives or reduce dimensions when a metric exceeds or could exceed 100. These are guidance figures, not universal limits for every backend. Cardinality means the number of distinct series or label combinations; it is not the same measure as the number of labels attached to one data point.

- Prefer bounded dimensions such as service, region, outcome class, or a route template.
- Avoid unbounded values such as individual user, request, and session identifiers in metric labels.
- Put detailed per-request or per-tenant investigation evidence in logs, traces, or events when that level of detail is needed.
Metric type matters too. A counter accumulates events and may reset; a gauge represents a value that can rise or fall. To track how long it has been since an event, exporting the event’s Unix timestamp lets a query calculate its age without an update loop.
Which Prometheus alternatives are worth evaluating?
The options below differ in who operates the storage layer and what integration work the team must validate. Compatibility and product descriptions identify candidates to investigate; they do not establish that a migration will preserve every workflow.

| Option | Operating model and documented scope | Questions to validate for incident use |
|---|---|---|
| VictoriaMetrics self-managed | Single-node and cluster software with Prometheus remote-write ingestion, Prometheus query API compatibility, MetricsQL, and configurable retention. The community version uses one retention setting at a time. | Who owns upgrades, backups and restore, availability, capacity headroom, retention, and on-call response? Do the team’s queries and rules behave as expected? |
| VictoriaMetrics Cloud | Managed service. Its documented use cases include Prometheus long-term remote storage and Prometheus replacement; the service offers metrics, logs, and traces products. VictoriaTraces was marked beta in the reviewed documentation. | Check current plan limits, retention, data location, ingestion and query charges, and how the metrics workflow connects to logs and traces. Determine whether any required workflow depends on a beta product. |
| Grafana Mimir OSS | Prometheus-compatible remote-write and PromQL backend designed to scale horizontally; the customer installs and administers it. | Can the team operate the deployment, including its object storage, retention, tenancy, rules, and alerting? What does that operational work cost in staff time? |
| Grafana Cloud Metrics | Managed Prometheus-compatible backend. Grafana lists free and paid options. | Verify current free-tier limits, retention, ingestion pricing, support, data location, and compatibility with the team’s queries and alerts. |
| AWS CloudWatch OpenTelemetry Metrics | AWS documents OTLP ingestion and PromQL querying. Its reviewed documentation specifies 15 months of storage, up to 150 labels per data point, and per-GB ingestion pricing without per-metric or API charges for this path. | Model the workload and region against current pricing; evaluate AWS coupling, semantic conversion, query and alert fit, and how the team will correlate metrics with incident logs and traces. |
The AWS label figure is a per-data-point label-count specification; it is not a time-series-cardinality target and should not be compared directly with Prometheus’s cardinality guidance. AWS’s reviewed page covers metrics and does not establish an equivalent integrated incident workflow across signals.
VictoriaMetrics documents both Prometheus protocols and OpenTelemetry metric ingestion. Grafana describes Mimir and Grafana Cloud Metrics as Prometheus-compatible. Those compatibility statements are useful starting points, not proof that histogram behavior, temporality, resource attributes, labels, dashboards, or alert logic map perfectly.

Should the team keep Prometheus or move its storage?
A replacement is not automatically an improvement. Prometheus’s local time-series database uses an in-memory head protected by a write-ahead log and time-based blocks, with configurable retention. A team that can operate its existing setup and retrieve the required incident history may have no reason to migrate solely because alternatives exist.
Consider a different storage or operations layer when the current setup does not meet the team’s retention, scale, or ownership needs. A managed service may reduce the work of operating the database, while a self-managed backend retains that responsibility with the customer. Neither model removes the need to decide what to retain, control series growth, validate queries, and assign incident ownership.

How should you run a migration evaluation?
- Choose an incident-shaped test window. Use a recent incident or stage a failure that produces signals the team understands. Record the questions the team needed to answer and the history required to answer them.
- Inventory the existing workflow. Gather the PromQL queries, dashboards, recording rules, and alerts used for that investigation. Identify the labels and metric types they depend on.
- Check label growth. Review whether labels represent bounded operational categories or contain user-, request-, or session-level identifiers. Estimate how series counts could change as services and traffic grow.
- Send representative data and validate semantics. OpenTelemetry is designed to separate instrumentation from a specific SDK; its specification says telemetry is not collected unless an SDK is included and enabled. Even when a destination accepts the protocol, confirm how temporality, histograms, resource attributes, dashboards, and alert logic behave with your data.
- Reconstruct the test incident. Verify that the needed metric history is present and that the existing queries and rules answer the original questions. Check whether the team can move from a metric signal to relevant logs or traces with enough context.
- Exercise an increase in traffic or series. Confirm the team can observe and control ingestion and series growth, and understand the effect on query behavior and spend.
- Make ownership and cost explicit. Compare candidates at the same measured workload, region, retention window, query load, and support level. Record who handles backups, access, capacity, upgrades where applicable, and incidents involving the observability stack.
Prometheus-compatible instrumentation can make it possible to change the backend without replacing every instrumented application. Treat that portability as an architectural goal to verify with representative data, not as a guarantee of a frictionless migration.
How can you compare cost without guessing?
Do not rank services by a “small team” label or by a single advertised rate. The available product documentation does not establish an apples-to-apples cost winner. A meaningful comparison needs the same observed ingestion volume, active-series and cardinality profile, retention window, query load, region, and support expectations for each candidate.
Include operating work in the comparison. For self-managed software, account for the people and systems needed to maintain storage and restore it when necessary. For managed services, verify the current limits and charges that apply to your workload. Plan details, pricing, free tiers, and beta status can change, so confirm them directly before committing.
