You can use an Android tablet for handheld-style gaming in two ways: run Android games directly on it, or use it as a screen for games streamed from a PC, Xbox console, or cloud service. The right setup depends on where the game runs, which controllers the tablet and game support, and whether you have the required host device, subscription, or regional access.
Choose where your games will run

These options are not interchangeable: Xbox Cloud Gaming runs a game in Microsoft’s cloud, while Xbox Remote Play streams a game from your own console. Steam Link likewise streams from a computer running Steam; it is not a cloud gaming service.
Use the tablet for native Android games
Install a game that supports your tablet and choose its touch controls or a compatible game controller. Controller support is game-specific, so check the game’s description or settings rather than assuming that a controller will work in every Android game.

Steam Link connects an Android device to a computer running Steam so the computer runs the game and streams its picture and controls to the tablet. Valve lists Android 5.0 and later phones, tablets, and TVs as supported. That platform requirement does not establish compatibility or performance for every tablet, game, or network.

- Install Steam Link on the Android tablet.
- Make sure the computer you want to use is available and running Steam.
- Open Steam Link and follow its connection prompts to connect the tablet to that computer.
- Choose a game in Steam and use touch controls or a controller supported by the tablet and game.
Because the game runs on the computer, this option depends on that host being available and on the connection between the computer and tablet. Check that the game supports your chosen controls.
Play through Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming streams games from Microsoft’s service rather than from an Xbox in your home. Xbox says Android 12 or later is supported, but device and regional eligibility can change. Check Xbox’s current supported-device and region information, subscription requirements, and game availability before setting it up.

- Confirm that the tablet, your region, and the game you want to play are currently eligible.
- Make sure you have the required subscription.
- Connect the tablet to a suitable network and open Xbox Cloud Gaming using the access method currently available for your region and device.
- Select an available game and use a compatible controller, or touch controls if that game offers them.
Xbox recommends “5GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data with speeds of 20Mbps or higher.” This is Microsoft’s recommendation, not a guarantee of smooth streaming: actual experience depends on the connection and other factors.
Stream games installed on your Xbox with Remote Play
Xbox Remote Play streams games installed on your own console. It is different from Cloud Gaming: you need the console and the game installed, and remote features must be enabled on the console.

- Enable remote features on your Xbox console.
- Confirm that the game you want to play is installed on that console.
- Use the Xbox remote-play setup on your Android device and connect to your console.
- Play with a compatible controller or touch controls where the game and setup support them.
Connect a controller and position the tablet
Xbox says controllers can connect to most compatible devices by Bluetooth or a wired connection, but compatibility still depends on the tablet, controller, connection method, and game. Pair a Bluetooth controller through the tablet’s Bluetooth settings, or use a wired connection if the tablet and controller support it. Then confirm that the game recognizes the controls. Some Xbox cloud games offer touch controls; availability varies by game.
A tablet stand can be useful if you are using a separate controller and want to prop up the screen. It is optional, not a requirement. Do not assume a telescopic controller designed to hold a phone will fit a tablet; check the product’s stated device dimensions and compatibility before buying.

Check these details before choosing a setup
- Game source: Native Android games run on the tablet; Steam Link streams from a PC; Xbox Cloud Gaming streams from Microsoft’s service; Xbox Remote Play streams from your console.
- Host hardware: Steam Link needs an available computer running Steam. Remote Play needs your Xbox console. Cloud Gaming does not use either as the game host.
- Access and eligibility: Cloud Gaming requires a subscription and supported device and region; its available games can change.
- Controls: Verify controller support for the tablet and the specific game, or check whether touch controls are available.
- Network: Streaming options rely on a network connection. Xbox’s stated speed recommendation does not promise a particular result.
