“Hard drive cost” can mean the price of one drive, its price per terabyte, or the full cost of buying and operating a storage system. For a quick drive-to-drive comparison, divide the listing price by the drive’s advertised capacity in terabytes. For a system that runs continuously, also account for electricity and, where relevant, cooling.
What does “hard drive cost” mean?
The phrase is ambiguous, so specify which cost you mean:
- Purchase price: the amount paid for one drive. Say whether it is a bare drive or includes an enclosure or other equipment.
- Price per terabyte: purchase price divided by advertised capacity. This helps compare capacity value, but does not by itself show whether a drive suits a particular task.
- Total system cost: the cost of acquiring and operating a storage setup, including electricity and potentially cooling for an always-on installation.
How do you calculate and compare price per terabyte?
- Choose the listing price for the product you intend to compare, noting whether it is a bare drive, an external drive with an enclosure, or part of a larger system.
- Use the advertised decimal capacity in terabytes. If a listing gives capacity in gigabytes, convert it using 1,000 GB = 1 TB.
- Divide the price by the advertised capacity. For example, a hypothetical 4 TB drive listed at $100 costs $25 per advertised terabyte ($100 ÷ 4). This example is arithmetic, not a current market price.
- Compare like with like: use the same market and date, and compare similar product classes. Then consider performance, dependability, dimensions, and intended workload, not only capacity.
The Federal Reserve identifies bandwidth, latency, dependability, and scalability as characteristics that affect storage value. A lower price per terabyte may not be the better choice if the drive cannot meet the workload’s performance or reliability needs. Federal Reserve, “Prices for Data Storage Equipment and the State of IT Innovation” (2015)
What changes the cost of a storage system?
Drive capacity and product type
Capacity affects the amount of data a drive can hold, while the product type determines what is included in the purchase. A bare internal drive, an external drive with an enclosure, and a complete storage system are not directly equivalent prices. Toshiba’s online-storage criteria also identify physical dimensions, power dissipation, and performance as relevant alongside cost per capacity. Toshiba, “Online data is continually increasing”

Performance and workload
Bandwidth describes how much data can be transferred over time; latency describes how long a device takes to respond. Workloads that need fast responses may justify a different choice from workloads that mainly need economical capacity. Dependability and scalability matter too, especially when a system must keep operating or grow over time.
Electricity and cooling
For continuously operating storage, the purchase price is only part of the cost. Include power consumption over the expected operating period and cooling where applicable. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program uses an average electricity price of 11 cents per kWh for federal facilities as of July 2024 in its data-center example. That is a dated assumption for federal facilities, not a universal household or business electricity rate. U.S. Department of Energy, “Purchasing Energy-Efficient Data Center Storage”

How does hard drive cost compare with SSD cost?
The answer depends on the product class, market, and date. In a 2015 analysis, the Federal Reserve described HDDs as a low-cost option for large-scale storage and SSDs as more expensive per stored unit but faster to respond. This is a broad, dated comparison—not a current price ratio or a guarantee about every model. Compare actual listings for the same market and date if you need a purchasing decision.

Historical price declines explain why storage capacity has become more affordable over time, but they do not predict today’s retail price. The Federal Reserve note reports Webb’s 2011 estimates of annualized retail HDD price-per-megabyte declines: 57.2% from 1995 to 2000 and 40.5% from 2000 to 2010. Those figures describe past periods and should not be treated as rates that continue today. Federal Reserve note reporting Webb (2011)

A 2024 National Academies consultation discussed an expected average HDD price of about $0.015 per GB in its industry context. It is a dated broad estimate, not a verified retail average for October 2026 or a quote for a particular drive.
