Enterprise relationship management (ERM) is an organization-wide approach to coordinating relationships with the groups an organization depends on—not just its customers. It combines relationship-focused communication, information sharing, and coordinated processes; software can support that work, but no single system is ERM by itself.
What enterprise relationship management means
Enterprise relationship management describes how an organization manages relationships across its broader network of stakeholders. NiCE, a technology vendor, defines it as a business strategy involving transparent data sharing and coordinated processes across groups such as customers, suppliers, business partners, and employees. It also frames ERM as a change-management effort involving people as well as technology. NiCE’s glossary offers one vendor definition, not a universal formal standard.
The exact stakeholder network depends on the organization. SAP’s stakeholder relationship-management material also identifies shareholders, state institutions, and the general public, and notes that different groups have different expectations. ERM does not require every organization to manage every category in the same way.
How ERM differs from CRM and supporting software
Customer relationship management (CRM) focuses on customer relationships. Enterprise relationship management takes a wider view, coordinating relationships across the organization’s stakeholder network. CRM may be one part of that work, but it does not by itself cover relationships with suppliers, employees, partners, or other relevant groups.

The strategy can draw on data and capabilities in several kinds of business systems. NiCE names CRM, human resource management (HRM), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications as possible support. These systems may help teams access information or coordinate processes; implementing them alone does not establish an organization-wide relationship-management strategy.
Enterprise relationship management is not enterprise risk management
ERM is also widely used for enterprise risk management, a distinct discipline concerned with risk and uncertainty in relation to organizational objectives. NIST’s glossary uses ERM for enterprise risk management, and its Baldrige article discusses embedding risk management in organizational culture and performance. NIST’s glossary entry and Baldrige’s systems-perspective article address that risk-focused meaning.

Spell out “enterprise relationship management” or “enterprise risk management” on first use, especially in material about governance, compliance, or organizational risk. The shared acronym can otherwise make two different subjects sound interchangeable.
Where ISO 44001 fits
ISO 44001:2017 is a formal standard for collaborative business relationship-management systems. ISO says it specifies requirements for identifying, developing, and managing collaborative relationships within or between organizations. Its examples include alliances, partnerships, joint ventures, networks, and extended-enterprise arrangements. It can apply to one relationship, multiple relationships, or identified relationship types across an organization.

ISO 44001 is a related framework for collaborative relationships, not a complete definition of every use of “enterprise relationship management.” The catalog page lists the edition as reviewed and confirmed in 2022 and also displays a revision stage, so check its current catalog status before relying on it as a current standard. See ISO’s ISO 44001:2017 listing. For principles supporting collaborative relationship management, ISO also publishes ISO/TR 44000:2019, which introduces twelve principles.

- Which relationships are in scope? Identify the stakeholder groups that matter to the organization rather than assuming the focus is customers alone.
- How are teams coordinating? Look for shared information, communication, and processes that help the organization manage those relationships consistently.
- What role does technology play? Treat CRM, HRM, or ERP as supporting capabilities, and distinguish them from the broader strategy and organizational changes.
