A Windows 11 PC that feels slow after an update may be dealing with background activity, low storage, an app or driver issue, or another performance problem—not necessarily a faulty update. Start with a restart and Task Manager checks, then work through storage, updates, and Search indexing. If the slowdown began with a specific update and persists, consider recovery options only after backing up important files.

Why Windows 11 may feel slow after an update

The timing is a clue, not proof of cause. Windows performance can be affected by many open apps or browser tabs, startup programs, low disk space, malware, software or driver problems, and background tasks. An update may coincide with one of these issues, but Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance does not establish that a particular update causes slowdowns across PCs. Microsoft’s Windows 11 performance guidance recommends checking likely resource and system causes rather than assuming a single explanation.

Search indexing is one possible source of background activity. It is not evidence that every Windows update triggers reindexing, so check whether Search or File Explorer is actually busy before treating indexing as the cause.

What to check first

Restart and reduce open work

Restart the PC, then close apps and browser tabs you are not using. Many open apps or tabs can slow performance; a restart can also help reveal whether the slowdown persists after the session’s current work is cleared.

Find the resource-heavy process

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On Processes, review CPU, memory, and disk use. On Performance, check whether one of those resources is consistently under pressure.
  3. Open Startup apps to see which components load when you sign in. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need at startup.
  4. Identify a process before closing it. Do not end unfamiliar Windows or system processes just because they use resources.

High use by a familiar app may point to a practical fix, such as closing it, reducing its workload, or updating it. If no obvious app accounts for the slowdown, continue checking rather than guessing from a single momentary reading.

Check Windows and driver updates

Open Settings > Windows Update and check for available updates. Also review optional driver updates if shown. Microsoft says updates can include fixes and performance improvements, but installing one is not a guarantee that it will resolve this particular slowdown. Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance explains how to check for updates.

Check free storage

Low disk space can affect performance. In Settings, open System > Storage to review space use and available cleanup options. Storage Sense and temporary-file cleanup can help remove files you no longer need; review what will be deleted before confirming a cleanup.

Look at Search indexing only if activity points there

If Windows Search or File Explorer is using notable resources, open Settings > Privacy & security > Search. Classic indexes common user folders by default. Enhanced indexes all user folders and files and may use more system resources. Microsoft says initial indexing can take up to a couple of hours, but that is not a guaranteed waiting period after an update. Microsoft’s Windows Search indexing guidance describes the modes and indexing behavior.

Scan for malware when there are other signs

If you see unexplained heavy CPU or disk activity, unfamiliar processes, or other suspicious behavior, run a malware scan using Windows Security. Malware can consume system resources, but a scan is one check—not a conclusion that malware is responsible.

When to suspect a particular update

If the slowdown began immediately after a specific update and remains after the basic checks, use Windows Update history to identify the update and date. Then consult Microsoft’s release notes for that update and your Windows version. A release-note issue may apply only to a particular edition, environment, or device type; do not assume a reported issue affects every Windows 11 PC.

For example, Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 security update page for Windows 11 version 26H1, KB5124012 (OS Build 28000.2954), describes desktop-loading problems after the August 2026 preview update KB5120996 and subsequent updates. Microsoft says these were observed primarily on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix and could cause a black screen after sign-in, failure to load the desktop automatically, or Explorer crashes. The page lists launching explorer.exe through Task Manager and an enterprise Known Issue Rollback as mitigations, and says Microsoft was working on a resolution. This is a scoped virtual-desktop issue, not evidence of a general slowdown on consumer PCs. Check the KB5124012 release notes for current status before applying any issue-specific guidance.

Recovery options if ordinary checks do not help

If the PC starts but remains slow, freezes, crashes, or behaves unexpectedly, Microsoft recommends starting with the least disruptive suitable recovery option. Back up important files before recovery. Options differ in availability and in what they retain or remove:

Option When it may fit Availability and impact
Run a matching troubleshooter When the symptoms point to a problem with a Windows component that has a relevant troubleshooter. Choose a troubleshooter that matches the issue; it is a lower-disruption first step in Microsoft’s recovery guidance.
Reinstall the current Windows version When Windows needs repair but you want to preserve the existing setup. Available on Windows 11 version 22H2 or later; Microsoft says it preserves personal files, apps, and settings.
Uninstall a recent update When the problem clearly began after a particular update and persists. Not every update can be uninstalled. Removing an update changes the installed Windows state; back up files first.
System Restore When a suitable restore point predates the problem. Microsoft’s recovery guidance lists point-in-time restore for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. Review the effects before proceeding.
Reset this PC As a later option when less disruptive steps have not resolved the problem. Reset choices differ in whether personal files, apps, and settings are retained. Review the selected option carefully.
Go back to a previous Windows version When the problem followed a Windows version upgrade. The rollback option is available for 10 days after the upgrade; it is not a general way to undo any update.

Use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options to check the steps and conditions for your device. Before using Windows Recovery Environment, confirm that your important files are backed up and that you can access your BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled. A recovery drive is a last-resort preparation tool, not a method for making a slow PC faster.
