To back up a Samsung Galaxy S22, use Smart Switch for a separate copy on USB storage or a computer, Samsung Cloud or Google One for supported account backups, and OneDrive for selected synced files. These methods protect different things. Before resetting, repairing, or replacing the phone, confirm the backup finished, check what it contains, and know how you will restore it.
Choose the backup route that fits your goal
Samsung documents several backup and sync methods, but they are not interchangeable. Decide whether you need a local copy, a setup restore, selected files on another device, or a Galaxy-to-Galaxy transfer. The categories available can depend on the phone, software version, carrier, and country.
| Method | Best suited to | How you access or restore it | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Switch to USB storage | A separate local copy or transfer to another Galaxy | Connect the storage to the receiving Galaxy and restore in Smart Switch | Connection, available space, selected categories, and current app prompts |
| Smart Switch to PC or Mac | A local computer copy and later restore | Use Smart Switch Backup, then connect the receiving Galaxy and choose Restore | Correct computer app, USB connection, and selected content |
| Samsung Cloud | Supported Galaxy data and settings | Choose Restore data in Samsung Cloud | Which categories your region, device, and software support |
| Google One | An account backup used during Android or Galaxy setup | Sign into the same Google account during initial setup | That a recent backup exists and the Android versions are compatible |
| OneDrive sync | Selected photos or files available through the synced account | Sign into that account and inspect the synced files | Sync status and selected folders; this is not a whole-device restore |
Samsung outlines these roles in its overview of Galaxy backup and restore methods. No one method is a universal best choice: match the route to the data you need and the restore situation you expect.

Smart Switch can back up selected data to external USB storage or to a PC or Mac. Samsung’s U.S. setup guide documents both routes; exact screens depend on the Smart Switch version and connected storage.
#1 Best Overall
- The S22 uses a flat (non‑curved) 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 120 Hz refresh that dynamically adjusts between 48 – 120 Hz depending on content — which means smoother scrolling and better battery efficiency when high refresh isn’t needed.
- Its main rear camera features a 50 MP sensor with what Samsung calls “Tetra‑binning,” delivering stronger detail in bright light and surprisingly good low‑light photos compared to many older flagships.
- The build quality is designed to feel premium and durable: it uses an Armor Aluminum frame combined with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on front and back, which gives better scratch and drop resistance — nice if you want a relatively compact but rugged flagship.
- For video content and editing, the S22 supports 8K recording — rare for a “smaller” flagship. That means you can shoot very high-resolution video, useful if you care about future‑proofing footage or cropping/editing later.
- The phone strikes a balance of compactness and performance — in a world of increasingly large phones, the S22 remains fairly pocket‑friendly while still packing the 4 nm flagship‑class chipset (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 depending on region) for smooth daily performance.
Back up to USB storage
- Connect compatible external storage to the Galaxy S22. Depending on the drive, you may need a suitable USB-C connector or adapter.
- Open Smart Switch on the phone and select its storage or SD-card control.
- Choose USB storage as the destination, select the categories you want, and follow the prompts to complete the backup.
- Check the completion status in the app before disconnecting the storage.
To restore, connect the storage to the receiving Galaxy, open Smart Switch, choose Restore, select the wanted data, and follow the prompts. Check that the storage connection works and that the backup includes the categories you need. Samsung documents this process in its Galaxy setup guide; it does not endorse a particular drive or capacity.
Back up to a computer
- Install and open Smart Switch on a PC or Mac, then connect the S22 to the computer with USB.
- In Smart Switch, choose Backup, select the available content you want, and complete the on-screen steps.
- For a restore, connect the receiving Galaxy to that computer, open Smart Switch, choose Restore, and select the backup and content to restore.
A computer copy keeps the backup outside the phone, but it still depends on access to the computer, the Smart Switch app, and a working USB connection.

Use Samsung Cloud for supported Galaxy data
Samsung Cloud may offer categories such as phone and message history; contacts and calendars saved on the device; clock data; settings and home-screen layout; app installation files and Samsung app settings; and voice recordings. The actual list varies by country, carrier, operating system, and phone, so check the categories shown on the S22 rather than assuming everything is included.

Samsung says automatic backup requires the phone to be charging, its screen off, and Wi-Fi connected. Samsung’s Singapore support page, last updated March 26, 2024, states that files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up in the Samsung Cloud context described there. That is a limit stated on that Singapore page, not a universal guarantee about every region or current service behavior; confirm the limit and available categories in your local Samsung Cloud app. See Samsung’s Samsung Cloud backup and restore guidance.

Use Google One when you need a setup restore
Samsung describes Google One restoration as part of initial setup on a reset or new Galaxy. Before resetting, confirm that a recent backup is available under the Google account you will use on the receiving phone.
- During initial setup, reach the data-copy step and choose the option to continue without the old device.
- Sign in to the Google account used for the backup.
- Select an available backup, choose the apps and data offered, and continue through setup.
Restore behavior depends on the Galaxy model and Android version. Samsung cautions that a backup from a newer phone version cannot be restored to an earlier version. Its Google One guidance describes the setup workflow; check the options shown on your own device.

Treat OneDrive as file synchronization, not a full phone backup
Samsung lists OneDrive as a synchronization option for Galaxy devices. Depending on your settings, selected photos or files may sync to the account, allowing you to access those items elsewhere. That does not mean the phone’s full setup, apps, settings, and data can be restored from OneDrive.
- Check Gallery and OneDrive settings to see what is selected for sync.
- Confirm that the files you need appear in the destination account before deleting local copies or resetting the S22.
- Use Smart Switch, Samsung Cloud, or Google One as appropriate for device data and setup restoration.
Samsung’s backup and sync overview distinguishes OneDrive synchronization from the listed backup and restore routes.

Verify the backup before resetting, repairing, or moving phones
A completed backup is useful only if it contains the data you need and you can reach the restore route. Before making a destructive change, work through these checks:
- Check the backup’s completion time and inspect the categories or files it captured.
- Make sure you can sign in to the relevant Samsung or Google account, or access the computer or external storage holding the copy.
- Identify the restore method and the setup screen or Smart Switch app you will need.
- For OneDrive, verify synced files in the destination account rather than relying only on a phone-side sync indicator.
For a repair, Samsung advises backing up and deleting device data to protect personal information. If you cannot delete it, Samsung recommends enabling Maintenance mode. Follow the instructions for your device and repair situation in Samsung’s repair and backup guidance.
