A formatter can process JSON in your browser and still send separate analytics events when you click Share. That alone does not prove the event contains your pasted JSON. To find out, inspect the browser requests and the event-building code, and check share-link behavior separately. The incident described in the headline should be treated as a scenario unless its own network trace, code, or incident report confirms what was sent.
Was your pasted JSON sent to analytics?
You cannot tell from a button label, a privacy claim, or the fact that formatting happens locally. A web app may have separate data flows for JSON processing, analytics, and share-link creation. Check each one independently.
For example, one formatter says its JSON processing is client-side and that it does not receive JSON, while its analytics integration collects pages viewed, approximate location, and general device and browser details. That is the vendor’s disclosure, not an independent verification of another formatter or of the incident in this article. Read the formatter’s privacy disclosure.

A separate formatter disclosure describes optional telemetry limited to the tool, action, status, and coarse duration and size buckets, with editor input and output excluded. This is an example of a restricted event design—not evidence of what any other formatter sends. Read that formatter’s telemetry disclosure.

Does client-side processing mean the data never leaves your browser?
No. “Client-side” usually describes where the app performs a particular operation, such as parsing or formatting. It does not establish that every other feature is local. Analytics may send interaction details, and a Share feature may transmit content to create a stored link. Conversely, an analytics event that reports a click does not necessarily include the JSON.

Can a share link expose JSON even if the server does not receive it?
Yes. Some share links put content in the URL fragment, the portion after #. Fragments are not sent to a server in ordinary HTTP requests, according to the reviewed policy, but the complete URL can still be copied, saved, or shared. The policy names browser history, bookmarks, email, and social platforms as places a fragment-bearing URL may be exposed. See the policy’s discussion of share links and the formatter’s share feature.
Other share implementations send content to a server and return a link to stored data. Those are different privacy behaviors. A URL-encoded value is not necessarily encrypted: encoding changes representation, not who can recover the content. Treat a share URL containing sensitive data as sensitive, regardless of whether it uses a fragment or a server-stored link.

How to inspect what the Share button sends
Use synthetic JSON—never credentials, personal information, or production data—for the test. Browser developer tools can reveal requests made during the click; source inspection can show how event properties are assembled.
- Open the Network panel. In your browser’s developer tools, select Network, enable preservation of the log if available, and clear existing entries. Enter harmless test JSON in the formatter.
- Click Share and inspect new requests. Check the request destination, method, and payload or query parameters. Look for analytics event names and properties, as well as requests to a share endpoint. A click event may contain only an action label, or it may include more; verify the actual payload rather than inferring it from the event name.
- Check the resulting URL. Inspect the address or copied link for JSON in its path, query string, or fragment. Do not assume a fragment is secret simply because it is omitted from ordinary HTTP requests.
- Trace event construction in the code, if available. Search the Share handler and shared analytics helpers. Check automatic page, error, and exception instrumentation too: editor content can reach an event through a property, URL, error message, or logging context even when the direct Share event is clean.
- Verify the received event after changes. Repeat the test with synthetic input and inspect both browser requests and the analytics property’s received event. Confirm that JSON does not appear in event payloads, diagnostics, or links unless sending it is an explicit, understood part of sharing.
A browser trace shows what that browser sent during the test; it does not establish what the service retains, how long it retains it, or whether every deployment behaves identically. Review the site’s stated collection, recipients, retention, and consent or opt-out behavior as separate questions.

How to prevent JSON from entering analytics
- Use an allowlist. Send only necessary, low-detail fields such as action, tool, status, and coarse duration or size buckets. A formatter’s published telemetry design provides one example of this approach. Its disclosure describes the fields it says it collects.
- Exclude editor values and reversible derivatives. Do not attach raw input or output, secrets, exact content-derived values, or other data that could reveal or reconstruct the JSON.
- Check indirect paths. Review automatic instrumentation, error reporting, shared helper functions, URLs, and logging context—not just the analytics call inside the Share handler.
- Test the deployed behavior. After a code change, check the outgoing request and the received event with harmless test content. A policy statement alone does not verify the running implementation.
- Document the real data flow. State what is collected, who receives it, retention, and consent or opt-out behavior accurately. Different formatter disclosures describe different practices; do not generalize one vendor’s claims to all tools.

How the implementation choices differ
| Design choice | What to establish | Privacy implication |
|---|---|---|
| Local processing | Whether JSON is parsed and formatted in the browser, and whether any other feature sends it | Local formatting does not by itself establish that analytics or sharing is local |
| Analytics event | Whether the event contains content, identifying derivatives, or only allowlisted interaction fields | A Share event can be useful without sending the editor value |
| Share link | Whether content is stored server-side or placed in a URL fragment | Server-backed links transmit content; fragment links may avoid sending the fragment in ordinary HTTP requests but can still be copied or saved |
| Telemetry controls | Whether collection is consent-gated and fields are restricted | Consent and allowlisting reduce collection, but should be verified in the deployed app |
| Independent inspection | Whether requests and received analytics events can be checked with synthetic input | Inspection can verify observed behavior for the tested version and configuration, not every deployment or retention practice |
These are design distinctions illustrated by separate vendor disclosures, not results of a comparative independent audit. To establish that a particular formatter leaked pasted JSON, rely on evidence from that formatter’s own request trace, event record, code, or incident report.
