Sometimes—but only if the specific tablet is designed to run from external power without its battery. Android has software support for devices with no internal battery, but that does not mean an ordinary tablet will boot or stay on after its battery is removed. Check the exact model’s manufacturer documentation before trying it.
Why Android support does not guarantee your tablet will work
The Android Open Source Project documents how devices with removable batteries or no internal battery can detect battery presence and report battery and charger status to Android. That describes platform behavior, not a guarantee that any particular tablet’s hardware can operate without its battery. The device must be designed for that power arrangement, and its power reporting must be implemented appropriately. AOSP’s batteryless-device guidance is intended for device implementation, not as an instruction to remove a battery from an unsupported tablet.
Android version alone is not a reliable way to decide. The AOSP guide describes different defaults for Android 9 and later compared with Android 8.1 and earlier: when no battery is detected, newer versions can treat the system as externally powered even when charger types are reported offline. Those framework defaults do not establish that the tablet can physically start or operate safely without its battery.

Only if the manufacturer permits operation in that configuration. For the exact model, look for explicit instructions about using the tablet with the battery absent, along with its supported external power input and adapter specification. A charging port or compatible-looking connector is not proof that it can supply the power needed to boot and run the tablet without a battery.

- Battery-removed operation: Does the manual explicitly say the tablet can operate with no battery installed?
- External power: What input and adapter does the manufacturer specify for that configuration?
- Boot and sustained use: Does the documentation say the tablet can start and remain powered from the external supply alone?
- Service and safety: Are there steps or restrictions for removing the battery or powering the device?
If the documentation does not answer these questions, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider rather than assuming the tablet will work.
What a manufacturer example does—and does not—show
Zebra’s L10 Enterprise Tablet Product Reference Guide for Android 11 documents a dedicated AC adapter port and battery removal and replacement procedures. It instructs users to save files and either power off before removing the battery or connect the AC adapter and continue working while the battery charges.

This is a model-specific instruction about battery removal and charging. It does not expressly confirm that an L10 can boot or operate with no battery installed, and it says nothing about other tablet models. Use the guide only for the L10 configuration it covers.

Will my tablet work plugged in without a battery?
There is no universal answer. The manual for your exact model must confirm both battery-free operation and the supported power supply. Do not infer compatibility from Android’s battery status, a USB connector, or a charger that fits. If the manufacturer does not document the setup, treat battery-removed operation as unsupported.
For developers, AOSP describes checking battery presence through BatteryManager.EXTRA_PRESENT in an ACTION_BATTERY_CHANGED intent. That can help diagnose what Android reports; it does not verify that the hardware supports batteryless operation.
