IDE stands for Integrated Drive Electronics. It describes a drive design in which the controller electronics are built into the drive instead of sitting on a separate controller card. In PC hardware, IDE also became a common name for the associated drive interface, formally known as AT Attachment (ATA).
What does IDE mean?
Integrated Drive Electronics names an arrangement in which a drive contains its own controller electronics. Earlier systems could use a separate controller card to manage the drive. IDE became a widely used design for PC-attached disk drives; the Computer History Museum provides historical context at its account of IDE.
The term is most useful when discussing the older PC storage interface. Modern drives also have internal electronics, but that fact alone does not make them IDE drives.

ATA means AT Attachment, the formal standards name commonly associated with the IDE interface. In everyday hardware conversation, people often use IDE and ATA as near-synonyms, though the terms do not describe precisely the same thing: IDE emphasizes the drive’s integrated controller, while ATA names the interface standard. The Computer History Museum discusses the connection between the terms in its IDE history.

PATA means Parallel ATA. The “parallel” label became useful after Serial ATA (SATA) appeared, to distinguish the older parallel interface from the newer serial one. Microsoft documentation also uses IDE device identifiers in Windows driver-installation contexts, including device type, vendor/product string, and revision; this software usage does not mean IDE is a mainstream current storage interface: Microsoft’s overview of device setup classes.
How IDE/PATA differs from SATA
| Feature | IDE/PATA | SATA |
|---|---|---|
| Signal method | Parallel ATA | Serial ATA |
| Relationship | Older ATA interface, often called IDE | Separate serial interface |
| Connection | Uses PATA-compatible connectors and cabling | Requires SATA-compatible connectors and cabling |
| Compatibility | Requires a computer or adapter that supports the specific PATA drive | Requires a computer or adapter that supports SATA |
The distinction is about signaling and physical compatibility, not a promise about a particular transfer speed. No apples-to-apples performance figure is established here, and a cable or adapter for one interface is not automatically compatible with the other.

What devices used IDE-era connections?
IDE-associated connections were not limited to hard disks. ATAPI extended ATA to packet-oriented devices, including CD-ROM drives, tape drives, floppy drives, and removable-cartridge devices. See the ATA8-ATAPI specification.

A USB-to-IDE/PATA hard drive adapter can provide a way to access a legacy drive from a computer with USB. Check the drive and adapter before connecting them: a manufacturer documents an example adapter that supports 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch PATA/IDE drives and includes external power, but compatibility depends on the specific product and drive. See StarTech’s adapter documentation.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- 【Dual-Drive Simultaneous Use & Wide Compatibility】This hard drive adapter supports connecting one IDE drive and one SATA drive at the same time. It works with 2.5"/3.5" IDE HDDs, 2.5"/3.5" SATA HDDs and SSDs, as well as optical drives like CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and DVD-RW. The dual-head IDE connector (40-pin and 44-pin) and a SATA III port give you maximum flexibility for data migration, backup, or drive recovery.
- 【High-Speed Transfer with USB 3.0 & SATA III】Experience data transfer rates up to 6Gbps through the SATA III interface, with USB 3.0 connectivity (backward compatible with USB 2.0/1.1). Please ensure your computer has a USB-A port, as this hard drive reader uses a USB-A connection only.
- 【Stable Power Supply for Reliable Operation】The included 12V/2A power adapter is essential for stable performance—please always connect it when using this IDE to USB adapter, especially when accessing two drives simultaneously. The 4-pin power cable is designed specifically for 3.5" IDE drives (not required for SATA drives).
- 【Plug-and-Play with User-Friendly Design】No driver installation required. Supports hot-swapping for quick drive changes, and features an On/Off switch to protect your hard drives from unnecessary wear. The LED indicator clearly shows power and activity status.
- 【What's Included & Support】You'll receive the USB 3.0 to IDE+SATA adapter, a USB 3.0 data cable, a 4-pin power cable, a 12V/2A power adapter, and our 24/7 dedicated email support.
