To strip wood in Minecraft, use an axe on a log or stem. The block changes to its stripped version; this is an in-game interaction, not a crafting-table recipe.
How to strip a log or stem
-
Find or place the log or stem you want to change.
-
Select an axe in your hotbar.
-
Use the axe on the block. It becomes a stripped log or stripped stem.
The precise button or key depends on your edition and input device. The available references do not establish current controls for every Java and Bedrock platform, so use the block-interaction control shown for your setup rather than relying on one universal key or button.
What changes when wood is stripped?
The block remains a placeable block and can still be used as a building material. Stripped logs and stems act like their regular counterparts, while their appearance changes. Stripped variants also have crafting uses; check the in-game recipe book to see recipes available in your game. Minecraft’s crafting guide explains that the recipe book helps you find recipes and the materials they require.

Can you strip a block of bamboo?
Yes, the Java Snapshot 22w45a announcement says a block of bamboo can be stripped like other wood logs. That announcement described a snapshot feature, so it does not establish the exact behavior or controls in every current edition. It also says a block of bamboo can be crafted from 9 Bamboo. See the official Minecraft Snapshot 22w45a announcement for that original context.
Why isn’t the block stripping?
-
Make sure you are using an axe and interacting with the block itself, rather than opening an inventory or crafting interface.
