gpt-6.1-sol is OpenAI’s model for complex coding, computer use, and professional work where cost matters. It has a 1,050,000-token context window and supports text and image input, tool calling, streaming, and structured outputs. Standard text pricing is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with separate rates for cached input, cache writes, long prompts, and processing tiers. Use the Responses API when your request needs tools; use Chat Completions for requests without tools.
What is GPT-6.1 Sol?
GPT-6.1 Sol is an OpenAI API model released on September 29, 2026. OpenAI positions it for complex coding, computer use, and professional work, describing its performance as “near-Astra” at lower cost. That is vendor positioning, not an independent benchmark result; how it performs depends on the task, prompt, reasoning effort, and tool workflow.
The API model identifier is gpt-6.1-sol. OpenAI lists a knowledge cutoff of April 30, 2026. See the official model page and September 29 release note.

How much does GPT-6.1 Sol cost?
OpenAI’s published standard text rates are per million tokens. The rates below apply to prompts with up to 272,000 input tokens; requests above that threshold use different pricing.
| Token type | Standard price per million tokens |
|---|---|
| Input | $2.00 |
| Cached input | $0.10 |
| Cache writes | $2.50 |
| Output | $10.00 |
These are OpenAI’s 2026 published rates, not a fixed estimate of a project’s bill. Token volume and the pricing options used affect total cost. OpenAI says cached input costs 5% of the uncached input rate, while cache writes cost 1.25 times that rate. For requests with more than 272,000 input tokens, input and cache rates are doubled and output is charged at 1.5 times the standard rate for the full request.
- Fast: 2 times standard pricing.
- Batch and Flex: 50% below standard pricing.
- Regional processing: 10% additional charge where available.
These rates and options can change. Check the current model pricing page before budgeting or deploying. The release note also gives the standard rates for prompts up to 272,000 input tokens.
How do you use GPT-6.1 Sol in the API?
For a new integration, choose the API based on whether the request needs tools. Tool calling uses the Responses API; Chat Completions is supported for requests without tools.
- Set the model: use
gpt-6.1-solas the model identifier. - Choose the API: use Responses for tool workflows, or Chat Completions when you do not need tools.
- Set reasoning effort if needed: supported values are
low, medium, high, xhigh, andmax. The documented default ismedium;noneandminimalare unsupported. - Choose supported tools and output format: configure the Responses tools your workflow requires, or use function calling and structured outputs where appropriate.
- Measure the request in your application: track task success, latency, and token use, including cached tokens and any tool charges.
For current request syntax and supported options, consult the GPT-6 developer guide.

Sol may suit complex work when reducing token cost matters and its output meets your quality requirements. OpenAI’s family guide lists these standard per-million-token rates for GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, and GPT-6 Luna:
Rank #4
| Model | Input | Cached input | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | $10 | $1 | $50 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | $2 | $0.10 | $10 |
| GPT-6 Luna | $0.10 | $0.01 | $0.50 |
These are OpenAI’s 2026 standard text-token prices; long-prompt and processing-tier adjustments can change the comparison. Astra may be worth testing when its capabilities better fit a demanding task; Luna is a lower-priced option to evaluate for work that does not require Sol’s level of capability. Do not assume that a price difference predicts a quality difference for your workload.

OpenAI recommends selecting based on the workload and monitoring task success and latency in production; caching and compaction can help manage context and cost. Quick Recap
What should you check before deployment?
- Data residency: the model page lists US and EU residency. Fast mode is unavailable with EU data residency; verify current eligibility and pricing for your setup.
- Modalities: use Sol for text and image input with text output; it does not support audio or video.
- Context and spend: a large context window does not make long prompts free. Above 272,000 input tokens, the full request receives the stated higher rates.
- Fine-tuning: it is not listed as supported.
- Release maturity: the September 29, 2026 changelog described multi-agent support as beta.
