MCP and Claude Skills are not interchangeable: Anthropic describes MCP as an open protocol for connecting applications and models to tools and data. It names Agent Skills separately as agent infrastructure, but the sources available here do not establish enough detail about Skills to explain their format, loading behavior, product coverage, or interoperability with MCP. The practical distinction is therefore clear for MCP, but only high-level for Skills.
What does MCP do?
Anthropic defines the Model Context Protocol (MCP) as “an open protocol that standardizes how applications provide context to LLMs.” In practical terms, it is a standardized way for applications to connect AI models with external data sources and tools. Anthropic compares it to a USB-C port for AI applications: the protocol provides a common connection approach rather than describing how an agent should perform every task. Anthropic’s MCP overview lists support or integration guidance for the Messages API, Claude Code, Claude.ai, and Claude Desktop.
MCP is an open protocol, but that alone does not mean every MCP server works in every Claude product or has identical setup requirements. The configuration path and available features depend on the product or integration.

Anthropic’s Amazon Bedrock documentation lists “Agent Skills” separately from an “MCP connector” under agent infrastructure. That establishes that Anthropic treats them as distinct named items in that context; it does not explain what a Skill contains or how Claude loads, applies, or shares one. The sources cited here therefore do not support step-by-step Skills setup instructions or claims about which Claude products support them.
#1 Best Overall
For a comparison, the safe takeaway is limited: MCP has a documented role as a connection protocol for tools and data, while Skills is a separately named agent capability whose implementation details are not established by these sources. Avoid assuming Skills are a particular file format, automatically loaded, or portable across products without checking current Anthropic documentation.
Claude Skills vs MCP: the supported differences
| Question | MCP | Agent Skills |
|---|---|---|
| Documented role | An open protocol that standardizes how applications provide context to models and connect them to tools and data sources. | Named as agent infrastructure in Anthropic’s Bedrock documentation; detailed behavior is not stated there. |
| Openness and portability | Explicitly described as an open protocol. | Comparable portability or openness claims are not established by the cited sources. |
| Anthropic product coverage | The overview identifies integration guidance for the Messages API, Claude Code, Claude.ai, and Claude Desktop. Setup and support can differ by surface. | Current product availability is not established by the cited sources. |
| Setup information | Claude Code documents the claude mcp command for configuring MCP servers. |
Setup procedure and format are not established by the cited sources. |
The distinction is about what the evidence supports, not proof that Skills cannot connect to tools or that MCP cannot be used alongside a Skill. Those stronger claims are not established here.

When should you use MCP?
Consider MCP when the requirement is to give a Claude application a standardized connection to external context, tools, or data. First identify the product you are using, then follow its current integration instructions; configuration for Claude Code is not automatically the same as setup for the API, Claude.ai, or Desktop.
Recommended Free Tools
Configure MCP in Claude Code
Anthropic’s CLI reference documents claude mcp for configuring MCP servers. Consult the live Claude Code CLI reference for the current command options and server configuration details rather than relying on a setup recipe for another product.
Use MCP with the Messages API
Anthropic documents a remote MCP connector for API workflows. Its setup and feature support may be version-sensitive, so consult the current MCP connector documentation for the applicable requirements. Do not assume a connector’s current transport, beta status, headers, or limitations from an older example.
Use MCP in Claude.ai or Claude Desktop
Anthropic’s MCP overview includes guidance for Claude.ai and Claude Desktop. Use the instructions for the specific surface: the overview establishes that integration guidance exists, not that each surface has the same configuration steps or capabilities.

When might Skills and MCP be used together?
At a conceptual level, a workflow might need both a capability or task-handling component and an external connection. In that framing, a Skill could represent how a task is handled, while MCP supplies a connection to a tool or data source. This is an architectural inference, not a verified Anthropic recommendation or guarantee that Skills and MCP interoperate in a particular way.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore designing around that combination, verify the current Skills documentation for its supported products and behavior, and the MCP documentation for the target connection. The sources cited here do not establish an official integration procedure or compatibility matrix.

How to choose
- Need a connection to external tools or data? MCP is the documented protocol to investigate; confirm support and setup for the Claude surface you plan to use.
- Need to understand or configure an Agent Skill? The cited sources are insufficient for implementation guidance. Check current first-party Anthropic documentation before relying on assumptions about its format or availability.
- Need both task guidance and external integration? Treat the combination as a plausible design, then verify compatibility and configuration for the exact products involved.
