For most Mac users who need to connect to a server, start with Apple Terminal and its OpenSSH workflow. Install PuTTY through Homebrew if you specifically need PuTTY tools or a workflow built around PuTTY. Choose a graphical SSH client when saved connection profiles, tabs, split views, or integrated file transfer would make your work easier.

These options are not interchangeable: Terminal is a macOS app, OpenSSH and PuTTY are SSH software, Homebrew is a package manager, and a GUI client is an app for managing connections.

Does PuTTY have a Mac version?

PuTTY’s project FAQ says that the core team does not expect to finish a Mac version. That describes the project’s position on its own Mac port; it does not mean PuTTY cannot be installed or used on macOS. Homebrew packages PuTTY for Mac, including command-line and GUI-related tools. Installing that package is not evidence of a finished upstream native Mac GUI.

The project FAQ’s answer is framed as of 2026, and its outlook should be understood as the FAQ author’s statement, not a promise about future development. See the PuTTY project FAQ and the current Homebrew PuTTY formula.

Which SSH option should you use on a Mac?

Your need Start with Why
Occasional server connection or remote command Apple Terminal with OpenSSH Apple documents SSH connections through Terminal, so a separate GUI client is not necessary for the basic workflow.
Scripts, automation, or repeatable command-line configuration OpenSSH Its client and configuration are documented in the OpenSSH manuals.
Existing PuTTY habits, PuTTY suite tools, or a PuTTY-dependent process PuTTY installed with Homebrew Homebrew currently packages PuTTY for macOS; verify the live formula before installing.
Saved hosts, simultaneous sessions, split panes, or integrated file browsing A GUI SSH client Some clients document features such as tabs, split views, and SFTP. Feature availability can depend on the app and plan.

Apple’s guide confirms that Terminal supports remote connections including SSH and SFTP. OpenSSH’s manuals cover the command-line client and its configuration. Read Apple’s guide to connecting to servers in Terminal and the OpenSSH manual pages.

When is Terminal with OpenSSH enough?

Use the built-in Terminal workflow if you mainly need to log in to a remote machine, run commands, or transfer files with SFTP. It avoids adding a separate connection manager when a terminal session meets your needs. OpenSSH is also a natural choice when you want configuration and automation that fit a command-line workflow.

Homebrew is not an alternative SSH protocol or a graphical workflow. It is a way to install software. Homebrew offers an OpenSSH formula as well, but installing it is relevant only if you have a specific reason to use Homebrew’s package instead of the macOS-provided workflow. The formula is separate from PuTTY: Homebrew’s OpenSSH formula.

When should you install PuTTY with Homebrew?

Choose Homebrew PuTTY when you rely on PuTTY’s suite or already have a process that expects its tools. The formula’s installation command is brew install putty. At the time of the Homebrew formula page checked for this article, it listed version 0.85 and bottles for Apple Silicon macOS and Intel Sonoma. Versions and bottle availability can change, so check the live PuTTY formula before installing rather than treating those details as permanent.

Check the current Homebrew installation documentation for the support matrix that applies to your Mac and macOS release.

When does a GUI SSH client make sense?

A GUI client is worth considering when connection management—not just opening a shell—is the friction point. Saved host profiles, multiple tabs, split views, and integrated SFTP can help if you regularly move among servers or need a visible file-transfer workflow.

For example, the Termius for Mac App Store listing describes tabs, split view, and SFTP, with some features assigned to Pro and others to Starter. Do not assume every listed feature is included in one free tier; check the listing’s current plan details. SecureCRT for macOS is another vendor-described SSH client with terminal-emulation features. Compare the current offerings against the workflow you actually need rather than assuming all GUI clients provide the same capabilities.

What to compare between clients

  • How each app stores hosts and connection settings.
  • Whether it can use or import your OpenSSH configuration.
  • Whether tabs, split views, and SFTP are available in the version or plan you would use.
  • How it handles keys and SSH agents.
  • Which platforms it supports and whether the features you need are included or plan-dependent.

Will a GUI app find tools installed with Homebrew?

Not necessarily. Homebrew says macOS GUI apps do not inherit its prefix in PATH by default. This matters if a GUI application tries to call a Homebrew-installed executable and cannot locate it. Confirm that the specific app depends on that executable and follow the app’s and Homebrew’s current guidance before changing environment settings globally. See Homebrew’s FAQ.
