A PS5 can use a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with a capacity of up to 8 TB, but capacity alone does not make a drive suitable. PlayStation’s requirements cover the interface, speed, physical size and cooling hardware together. The manufacturer information available for this guide identifies two 8 TB product paths: CORSAIR MP600 PRO LPX and WD_BLACK SN850P with heatsink. That is not enough to support a reliable five-drive ranking, so this guide focuses on compatibility and what to check before buying.
PS5 M.2 SSD requirements
PlayStation’s support guidance allows compatible M.2 SSDs from 250 GB to 8 TB. The drive must use PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe and Key M; M.2 SATA drives are not supported. PlayStation recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s and requires effective heat dissipation. These are console compatibility requirements and recommendations, not a guarantee that every drive with a matching headline specification will fit. PlayStation’s PS5 M.2 SSD requirements provide the full specification.
Check the complete size, including the heatsink
The module and its heat-dissipation hardware must fit inside the console’s expansion bay. PlayStation specifies a maximum assembled width of 25 mm and total thickness of 11.25 mm, with no more than 8 mm above the board and 2.45 mm below it. Supported module lengths are 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm. Both single-sided and double-sided drives can be supported, provided the complete assembly stays within the dimensional limits.

Use the dimensions for the exact drive and heatsink combination you intend to install. A bare SSD’s dimensions do not establish that a separately added heatsink will fit, and a product-line name alone does not confirm that every regional SKU has the same configuration.

Two manufacturer-identified 8 TB options
The following models are supported by manufacturer materials as 8 TB products associated with PS5 compatibility. The available specifications do not establish a complete comparison of assembled dimensions, current stock, prices, warranties or real-console performance, so they should not be treated as a ranked top two.
| Model | What the cited manufacturer material establishes | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| CORSAIR MP600 PRO LPX 8 TB | CORSAIR describes it as a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe 1.4, M.2 2280 SSD and identifies it as PS5/PS5 Pro compatible. CORSAIR product page | Confirm the exact 8 TB listing and that its assembled width and thickness, including the heatsink, meet PlayStation’s limits. |
| WD_BLACK SN850P 8 TB with heatsink | Western Digital’s PS5-console product-line data sheet lists an 8 TB heatsink SKU, WDBBYV0080BNC-WRSN. Western Digital data sheet | Check the exact SKU’s assembled dimensions and whether it is available in your region; the cited data sheet does not establish current local stock. |
How to choose an 8 TB drive without relying on a ranking
For any candidate beyond these two, verify the particular 8 TB SKU rather than assuming that a product family’s capacity or PS5 branding applies to every variant. Compare these details against PlayStation’s requirements before ordering:
Rank #2
- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4]. Easy to install so you can play with confidence. [4]For PlayStation 5 firmware compatibility, please visit the WD_BLACK Product Page.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1] you can add enough additional PS5 storage to your console to store more of your favorite games. [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer games or remove games from your console with tested and officially approved storage for your PS5 console[4]
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen4 technology with read speeds up to 7,200MB/s[3], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [3]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
- Capacity and interface: Confirm that the exact model is 8 TB, M.2 NVMe, PCIe Gen4 x4 and Key M—not M.2 SATA.
- Read speed: Check the manufacturer’s sequential-read specification against PlayStation’s recommendation of at least 5,500 MB/s.
- Assembled dimensions: Check supported length, width and total thickness with the heatsink installed.
- Cooling: Confirm whether a heatsink is included or must be added, and assess the resulting assembly rather than the bare drive.
- Exact listing: Match the capacity suffix and model number on the retailer listing to the manufacturer’s specification. Check regional availability, current price and warranty there; those details are not established for the two products above.
Samsung’s cited 990 PRO materials establish a 4 TB capacity announcement and specifications for the series, but do not establish an 8 TB SKU. Those sources therefore do not support listing the 990 PRO as an 8 TB choice.

Before installing an M.2 SSD
PlayStation advises updating the console system software before installation. Follow its official installation instructions for the console model you own, and contact the SSD manufacturer if you cannot confirm that the exact assembled drive meets the stated requirements. Do not force a drive or heatsink into the bay if it does not fit within the specified envelope.
