Gigapixels per second (Gpix/s) measures a rate of pixel activity, not the size of a single image. In camera specifications, it commonly means pixels captured per frame multiplied by frames per second, then divided by one billion. But the same unit can describe image data transmitted over a display link or information reconstructed by an imaging system, so a Gpix/s figure is meaningful only when you know what the system is counting.
What does gigapixels per second mean?
A pixel count describes the spatial size of an image or reconstruction. Adding “per second” makes it a throughput rate: how many pixels a system captures, processes, transmits, or reconstructs in one second.
One gigapixel is one billion pixels. For camera sensor throughput, the calculation is:

Gpix/s = pixels per frame × frames per second ÷ 1,000,000,000

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
For example, a camera producing 2,000,000 pixels per frame at 500 frames per second would have a calculated throughput of 1 Gpix/s, provided both figures describe the same operating mode.
How is camera throughput calculated?
For high-speed cameras, Vision Research defines sensor throughput as the maximum sensor resolution multiplied by the maximum frame rate at that resolution. The resolution and frame rate must come from the same camera mode. A camera may reach a higher frame rate by reading a smaller active image area, so its headline frame-rate maximum alone does not establish its maximum pixel throughput.

When checking a camera figure, establish the pixel dimensions or pixel count per frame, the frame rate in that exact mode, and whether the stated rate concerns sensor capture or another stage such as image processing.

Why can the same Gpix/s unit describe different things?
The unit identifies a rate, but not the stage of the system being measured. A sensor, image processor, display interface, and computational reconstruction system can all report Gpix/s while counting different kinds of pixel activity.

- Sensor capture: pixels sampled by a camera sensor per second, often calculated from resolution and frame rate at the same setting.
- Image processing: pixels handled by an image signal processor (ISP). This is not automatically the same as the sensor’s capture rate.
- Display-link content: image content transmitted over an interface. MIPI Alliance’s 2021 announcement said DSI-2 v2.0 could support more than 6 Gpix/s of uncompressed image content when coupled with MIPI D-PHY v3.0 or C-PHY v2.0/v2.1. That is a link capability, not a camera sensor measurement. The MIPI specification page lists DSI-2 v2.2, dated July 2024, as its current version.
- Reconstructed imaging information: effective pixels reconstructed by a computational imaging system. This may describe a research method’s output rather than the sensor’s physical sampling rate.
Examples of published Gpix/s figures
These figures are examples of different definitions and configurations, not a ranking of comparable products.
| Figure and source | What it describes | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| More than 6 Gpix/s — MIPI Alliance, 2021 | Uncompressed image content supported by DSI-2 v2.0 | Qualified for coupling with D-PHY v3.0 or C-PHY v2.0/v2.1; the current-version listing on MIPI’s specification page is DSI-2 v2.2 (July 2024). |
| 2.7 Gpix/s — Qualcomm, 2020 | Capture rate attributed to the Snapdragon 888’s Spectra 580 ISP | An ISP capture-rate claim, not a general camera sensor specification. |
| 16 Gpix/s — Teledyne Vision Solutions, date not stated on the product page | Linea HS2 data throughput | The product page associates the figure with a 16k, 1 MHz configuration. |
| Approximately 20.8 Gpix/s — Nature Communications, 2026 | Space-bandwidth-product throughput in a computational ptychography system | The paper reports a 30,480 × 22,800-pixel reconstruction at 30 frames per second; this is a reconstruction metric, not a general sensor-throughput specification. |
How to compare Gpix/s claims fairly
Compare figures only after confirming they measure the same stage and use compatible conditions. For camera sensor claims, compare resolution and frame rate together and verify the active image area and operating mode. For display links, check the specification version, physical-layer interface, and whether the content is uncompressed. For computational imaging, determine whether the number counts sensor samples or reconstructed effective pixels and note the reconstruction method.

Compression, interface configuration, and the system stage being counted can change what a published figure means. A bare Gpix/s number does not establish image quality, detail, or overall system performance.
