Write once, read many (WORM) describes storage that lets data be recorded once and read repeatedly while preventing it from being changed or erased. It is a storage behavior, not one file format or product: physical media can make writing irreversible, while managed storage can enforce retention rules.
What does WORM mean?
WORM stands for “write once, read many.” After data is recorded, the medium or system is designed to prevent changes or deletion. The exact protection depends on how WORM is implemented: a physical disc can rely on an irreversible change to its recording surface, while a storage service can enforce configured controls.
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) describes the optical-media version as a laser changing a disk’s reflective characteristics. Because that physical change is nonreversible, the recording process is designated write-once. NARA’s optical-media guidance is historical guidance; its explanation applies to optical recording, not every modern storage system.

Physical media: DVD-R
Recordable optical discs marked R, including DVD-R, are a familiar physical example. The Library of Congress identifies recordable R media as WORM technology, and a NIST and Library of Congress study defines DVD-R as a format whose data can be written once and read many times. This does not mean every optical disc is WORM: rewritable RW media are a different category. See the Library of Congress research on CD-R, DVD-R, and RW longevity and the September 2007 NIST and Library of Congress Optical Disc Longevity Study.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Managed storage: object locking
WORM can also be a behavior enforced by managed storage rather than by a physical recording surface. Amazon Web Services says its S3 Object Lock uses a WORM model: retention periods and legal holds can prevent objects from being overwritten or deleted for a configured period or indefinitely. These are service controls; the outcome depends on the service’s configuration and does not establish that any particular setup meets a legal or regulatory requirement. See AWS documentation on locking objects with Object Lock.
A standard for optical cartridges
WORM also appears in technical standards. Ecma International’s first-edition ECMA-280, published in December 1998, specifies a 130 mm optical disk cartridge with a capacity of 5.2 Gbytes. For that format, the standard describes irreversible writing effects, marks that cannot be erased, and detectable attempted modification. Those properties and that capacity belong to the defined historical cartridge standard; they are not general specifications for WORM storage. Read ECMA-280.

- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Easily move files off your device, freeing up valuable space so you can store your favorite photos, movies, music, games, and more.
- Say goodbye to emailing photos between devices. Once they’re on your SanDisk Phone Drive, read speeds up to 100MB/s let you transfer files fast. (1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. USB Type-C port with USB 3.2 Gen 1 support required.)
- AUTOMATIC BACKUP. Automatically back up your latest photos, videos, music, documents, and contacts with the SanDisk Memory Zone app. (Download and installation required. Set up automatic backup within app settings. See official SanDisk website for Memory Zone details.)
- DATA RECOVERY. Recover deleted files with the included RescuePRO Deluxe software.(Registration and download required; terms and conditions apply. See RescuePRO page on SanDisk site.)
- CONVENIENT DESIGN. Attach your drive to your keyring to help keep it secure so you can have storage wherever you are, whenever you need it.
Does WORM mean data will last forever?
No. WORM describes whether recorded data can be changed or erased under a particular medium’s or system’s rules; it does not guarantee that the data will remain readable forever. Physical media can deteriorate, and access also depends on compatible hardware and software. NARA recommends planning for interoperability, upgrades, and migration rather than assuming an optical disc will remain usable indefinitely. Its optical storage guidance discusses these preservation concerns.
The available preservation sources do not establish a universal lifespan or failure rate for DVD-R or other WORM media. Avoid treating “write once” as a durability rating.

What should you check when choosing WORM storage?
- What blocks changes? Find out whether edits and deletion are prevented by an irreversible physical process or controlled through system settings and policy.
- How long does protection apply? For managed storage, check how retention periods and legal holds are configured, including whether protection ends or can remain in place indefinitely.
- How will you read the data later? Consider whether the required hardware, software, and formats will remain available.
- How will you preserve access? Plan for verification, backups, and migration where needed; migration is a preservation measure, not a reason to assume the original WORM copy can be altered.
- Does it meet your obligations? A WORM label alone does not show that a system satisfies a particular compliance requirement. Check the applicable rules and the actual system configuration.
