To build a crypto mining rig, first choose a mineable proof-of-work network and its algorithm; then buy only compatible hardware and confirm your electrical supply, cooling, noise, and operating costs can support it. For Bitcoin, a purpose-built SHA-256 ASIC is the practical hardware class. Ethereum mainnet is not mineable: proof-of-work mining was switched off.
Choose a mineable network before buying hardware
Mining hardware is designed for particular algorithms. A GPU or ASIC that works for one network is not automatically useful for another, so begin by verifying the coin’s current mining status, proof-of-work algorithm, compatible hardware, and pool support.
Ethereum mainnet is not an option for mining. Ethereum.org says proof-of-work was switched off and describes its mining information as historical. Ethereum Classic is a separate network; its FAQ discusses ETC mining hardware and compatible pools, but that alone does not establish that a particular GPU build is profitable or currently supported.

Broadly, options include GPU-minable proof-of-work projects, coin-specific ASICs, and dedicated Bitcoin SHA-256 ASICs. Treat those as different hardware categories, not interchangeable choices. Check the exact network and algorithm before comparing models.

Choose hardware that matches the algorithm
Bitcoin: use a SHA-256 ASIC
For Bitcoin, purpose-built SHA-256 ASIC hardware is the practical class to consider. The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes ASIC mining and pooled mining. When comparing Bitcoin ASICs, check hashrate, joules per terahash, wall power, input voltage and current, noise, cooling requirements, purchase conditions, and warranty. Hashrate figures for different algorithms are not directly comparable.
Example: BITMAIN Antminer S21
BITMAIN’s S21 specification, updated April 8, 2024, lists SHA-256 coins BTC, BCH, and BSV; a typical hashrate of 200 TH/s; typical wall power of 3,500 W at 25°C; input of 220–277 V AC and 20 A; RJ45 Ethernet; and an operating temperature range of 0–45°C. These are manufacturer specifications for that model, not general requirements for mining rigs. Confirm the current model revision and specification before purchase. A hashrate or product specification is not evidence of profit. The available figures do not establish a current revenue estimate or break-even period.

Before ordering a miner, have a qualified person confirm that your site’s supply and circuit can support the exact unit and its other expected loads. Check the required voltage, current, grounded connection, cable, and power distribution equipment against the product manual and local electrical rules. BITMAIN warns that incorrect input voltage may damage the S21 and that ordinary cords and PDUs may not support newer high-power ANTMINER models. Do not treat a manufacturer’s wiring examples as universal installation instructions.

BITMAIN’s S21 safety guide states, “The equipment must be connected to an earthed mains socket-outlet,” and says, “DO NOT plug or remove the device when it is powered on.” Follow the manual for the exact model and revision; electrical requirements and code vary by location. BITMAIN S21 User Guide
Plan heat, airflow, and noise before installation
A miner turns substantial electrical input into heat, so choose a location and plan how that heat will leave the space before powering it up. Account for airflow, cooling, dust management, room conditions, and whether the installation can operate without disrupting people nearby. Follow the unit’s specified operating temperature range.

BITMAIN warns that ANTMINER sound can be very loud. Its S21 Pro specification lists 76 dBA at 25°C, but that measurement belongs to the S21 Pro—not the S21 example above. BITMAIN S21 Pro specifications
Estimate the full operating cost
Start with the miner’s wall power and your local electricity tariff, then account for cooling, networking, pool fees, equipment, and maintenance. For a device rated at 3,500 W, energy use depends on how long it runs: at that stated power, one hour corresponds to 3.5 kWh, before any additional cooling or supporting equipment. Multiply measured or specified consumption by your actual operating hours and tariff rather than assuming mining revenue will cover the bill.

Revenue and break-even depend on current network conditions, coin price, difficulty, pool terms, and operating costs. The cited material does not establish current profitability, hardware prices, or a payback period; recalculate using current figures before investing. Ethereum.org’s mining page also identifies electricity, hardware, and operating costs as relevant considerations.

Solo mining leaves you with the variance of finding a block yourself. In pooled mining, participants contribute hash power and proceeds are generally distributed roughly in proportion to contributed work. That can produce smaller, less variable payments than solo mining, subject to the pool’s rules and actual results. Bitcoin Developer Guide: Mining
Before joining, verify that the pool supports your chosen coin and algorithm. Compare its fee, payout method and threshold, geography, uptime, and current terms directly; no particular contemporary pool is endorsed here.

Set up and operate the rig in a safe order

- Calculate and monitor costs. Use the local tariff and actual or manufacturer-stated wall power; include cooling and other operating costs. Monitor temperature, network status, and operating behavior according to the manual.
