Yes. A threat can come from a physical device or connection, not just software: an inline keylogger can record typing, an unfamiliar USB connection can expose a phone to data transfer, firmware malware can persist through an operating-system reinstall, and a payment-terminal skimmer can capture card details. The practical defenses are to control physical access and be cautious about what you plug into or swipe through. These risks are not equally likely: a 2017 Ask Leo! article describes hardware keyloggers as rare, and evidence cited by CISA in 2023 did not establish confirmed public USB “juice-jacking” cases.
How can hardware create a security risk?
Hardware can be part of an attack when someone adds a device to equipment you use, connects your device to an untrusted system, or tampers with a payment terminal. Unlike ordinary malicious software, a physical device may sit outside the operating system’s view. That makes physical control important—but it does not mean every hardware attack is common or easy to carry out.

Can a hardware keylogger steal passwords?
Yes. A hardware keylogger can be placed inline between a keyboard and a computer, where it records keystrokes before they reach the computer. If you type a password while using that keyboard, it may be captured. Because the logger is a separate physical device, software running on the computer may not detect it.

Installing one requires physical access to the equipment. Ask Leo! characterized hardware keyloggers as rare in 2017; that is a qualitative description, not a current measured prevalence rate. Avoid entering sensitive information on public computers, and do not leave your own computer or keyboard accessible to people you do not trust.
Is it safe to charge a phone at a public USB station?
A USB cable can carry both power and data. When you connect a phone to a computer or charging station you do not control, the connection may allow interaction beyond charging. CISA advises travelers to avoid connecting devices to unfamiliar charging stations or computers because software on the connected computer can interact with the phone unexpectedly. For “juice-jacking,” the possibility of misuse should not be presented as proof of a widespread, confirmed attack. In a 2023 discussion of reports about the threat, CISA said those reports did not cite evidence and that it was not aware of confirmed cases. Can malware survive a clean reinstall in the BIOS or UEFI?
Firmware-level malware is technically possible, and a compromise at that layer can persist through an operating-system reinstall. CISA’s 2023 alert referenced Microsoft guidance for investigating the BlackLotus UEFI bootkit, a specific case that demonstrates the issue is not purely hypothetical. It does not establish that firmware infection is a common cause of malware returning on ordinary computers. CISA’s BlackLotus guidance alert
If malicious software reappears after a reinstall, first consider more common explanations, such as reinstalling the same malicious software or restoring infected files. Ask Leo! cautions against jumping to BIOS infection without evidence. Do not re-flash firmware speculatively; firmware reinstallation is a remedy to consider when an infection has actually been established.

How can you spot a card skimmer?
A skimmer is a device placed on or in a cash-machine or payment terminal to capture card information. A hidden camera or other device may also capture a PIN. Prefer familiar, trusted terminals when possible, and pay attention to parts that look loose, unusually bulky, or out of place.
Ask Leo! relays security researcher Brian Krebs’s practice of tugging on a card slot to check whether it seems attached securely. Treat that as an anecdotal check, not a reliable inspection method: a skimmer may not be obvious or detectable by tugging. If a terminal looks suspicious, do not use it; choose another payment method or terminal.
