There is no clear universal winner among the Linux password managers covered here. Choose KeePassXC if you want a local encrypted database and are willing to manage its syncing and backups; choose 1Password if you want a commercial Linux app, browser features, encrypted cross-device sync, and command-line access. Bitwarden is a documented option for Linux command-line users. Proton Pass belongs on a shortlist, but the available official details do not support ranking its Linux app or plan limits.
Which Linux password manager fits your workflow?
The key distinction is where your vault lives and who is responsible for keeping it available. KeePassXC uses a local database file, leaving storage and synchronization choices to you. 1Password describes a membership-based service with encrypted sync. The official Bitwarden material cited here confirms its Linux command-line client, while the available Proton Pass material is not detailed enough for a close Linux comparison.
| Option | Linux workflow established by official material | Storage and sync | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| KeePassXC | Native Linux application; official documentation also covers command-line use | Encrypted local database file; you choose whether and how to synchronize it | People who want local-vault control and will manage sync and backups |
| 1Password | Linux app, browser features, and command-line tool | Membership service with end-to-end encrypted sync | People who want a commercial cross-device workflow and CLI access |
| Bitwarden | Linux CLI support; installation routes include native executable, npm, Snap, and Flatpak | Not established in the official CLI page cited here | People whose priority is managing a vault from the command line |
| Proton Pass | Linux packaging and feature details are not established by the product and security pages cited here | Not sufficiently established for this comparison | A contender to investigate on its current official pages before choosing |
KeePassXC: a local vault you control
KeePassXC is free and open source, and its project describes the app as running natively on Linux. Its database is an encrypted file stored on your device rather than on a KeePassXC remote server. You can put that file in a shared cloud folder if you choose, but then you are responsible for selecting and maintaining the synchronization and backup approach. See the KeePassXC project site and its documentation.

Encryption options and their limits
The documentation describes AES-256 or Twofish database encryption, configurable key transformations, and optional key files or a YubiKey. These are implementation details, not a guarantee that a database or device cannot be compromised. A YubiKey is an optional hardware factor for workflows that support it, not a requirement for all password managers.

KeePassXC says its version 2.7.9 received an ANSSI Security Visa after passing the agency’s First-level Security Certification (CSPN). That claim applies to the specified version; it should not be read as certification of every release or as proof of total security. The documentation also notes that an audit applies to a code snapshot and can miss flaws. It dates an independent audit to 2023-01-19.
Trade-offs to consider
- You decide where the database file is stored and how it is synchronized and backed up. That flexibility also means more maintenance than a service that handles sync for you.
- If you store a TOTP secret in the same database as its password, you reduce the benefit of separating those factors. KeePassXC’s documentation suggests using a separate database and password when maximizing that separation matters.
- Release status matters for newer Linux features. The project reported version 2.7.12 on 2026-03-10 and version 2.8.0-beta1 on 2026-09-23. Auto-Type on Wayland and Polkit quick unlock on Linux were listed as planned beta features, not established stable-release capabilities.
1Password: a managed Linux and browser workflow
1Password’s Linux support page describes a Linux app, browser support for login filling and password generation, one-time-password filling, multiple vaults, and a command-line tool for managing vaults and items. It also describes end-to-end encrypted sync across devices and says a membership is required. Check the current Linux support page and official plan information for availability and current terms; no price or plan-limit comparison is established here.

- Intel Core i5-10210U (up to 4.2GHz) - 1TB PCIe NVMe + 1TB HDD - 32GB DDR4 SDRAM

- Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad
This is the clearest fit in this shortlist if you want an integrated commercial Linux app, browser features, syncing, and CLI access rather than maintaining a database file yourself.
Bitwarden: Linux command-line access
Bitwarden’s official CLI documentation confirms that its command-line client is available for Linux and supports vault access and management. It lists installation through a native executable, npm, Snap, or Flatpak; the page notes that installing through npm on Linux may require build-essential.

The cited CLI documentation does not establish a full comparison of Bitwarden’s Linux desktop app, synchronization details, pricing, or plan limits. If those are deciding factors, confirm them on Bitwarden’s current official product and plan pages rather than inferring them from CLI support.

How to make the choice
- Decide who should manage sync. Choose KeePassXC if you want to control the database file and its storage location. Prefer a managed service if you want the provider’s documented cross-device sync workflow.
- Check your daily Linux workflow. If browser filling, a desktop app, and command-line access all matter, 1Password documents those paths. If your primary need is vault management in a terminal, Bitwarden documents a Linux CLI, as does KeePassXC.
- Confirm current availability and terms. App releases, beta features, memberships, and plan limits can change. Consult the official pages linked above for your Linux distribution and intended use; the evidence here does not establish current prices or a comprehensive plan comparison.
- Plan for recovery and backups. With KeePassXC, make and protect a backup of the database and ensure your chosen sync method works for the devices you use. A local encrypted file does not automatically provide a recovery copy.
