If you mainly print text, the Brother MFC-L2820DW is the stronger monochrome candidate; if you need color documents and duplex scanning, consider the Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw. A third model, the Canon Color imageClass MF753Cdw, has a 2026 Consumer Reports score and guide price, but that data does not make it directly comparable to the MF665Cdw. Which kind of laser all-in-one fits your home?
Choose monochrome if your household mostly prints schoolwork, forms, bills, labels, and other text. A color model is useful when color is needed for charts, presentations, or other documents. Neither type is a good substitute for an inkjet when detailed photo printing is a priority: RTINGS notes that the Canon MF665Cdw’s photos are less detailed than inkjet output.
Also decide how you scan. A document feeder can make multi-page jobs easier, but check whether it scans both sides automatically. That capability matters if you regularly digitize double-sided documents.

Brother MFC-L2820DW: the monochrome choice
For households that rarely need color, the Brother is the clearest fit among these candidates. Its reported maximum speed is higher than the Canon MF665Cdw’s, and RTINGS describes its replacement toner cost as lower than that Canon’s. That does not by itself establish the lowest total cost: the Brother uses a separate drum, which is another consumable to budget for.

The MF665Cdw is the more relevant option when color documents and scanning double-sided originals are part of normal use. RTINGS reports a maximum of 26 pages per minute in either color or black-and-white and describes its document output as sharp. Canon Color imageClass MF753Cdw: keep its evidence separate
Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide gives the MF753Cdw an overall score of 74 and lists a price of $430. Those figures apply to the MF753Cdw only. They must not be transferred to the MF665Cdw, which is a different model. Tom’s Guide discusses the MF753Cdw II, a further distinct generation; its description of that printer as a workhorse does not establish that the MF753Cdw and MF753Cdw II share results, features, or supplies.
How to compare the real cost of ownership
Page speed and quoted toner yield are only pieces of the cost picture. Before choosing, identify the exact printer variant and check the compatible replacement toner, its price, and any separate drum or other replaceable imaging component. Compare those supplies against the amount and kind of printing your household actually does; a high-yield cartridge is less useful if its upfront replacement cost does not suit your budget.

- Verify the full model name and suffix on the printer and the retailer listing.
- Confirm that the toner listed for that exact model is available where you live.
- For the Brother MFC-L2820DW, include the separate drum in long-term costs.
- For a color model, consider whether color is worth the additional supply expense for your actual jobs.
Check the scanner before you buy
“All-in-one” does not tell you whether a feeder can scan both sides automatically. If you often scan multi-page, double-sided paperwork, verify duplex scanning for the exact model and confirm whether the feature works through the feeder. The MF665Cdw is specifically described by RTINGS as supporting duplex scanning through its ADF. The cited details do not establish the same capability for the other models here, so check their exact specifications rather than assuming it.

RTINGS says its current guide reflects more than 170 printers tested since 2020 and describes a standardized testing process with products it purchases itself. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide assesses printers across several dimensions and separates color and monochrome all-in-one categories. These sources do not provide a single, consistent home-use ranking of five models in the evidence available here. Combining their scores, recommendations, or generations into a numbered top-five list would imply a comparison that has not been established.
