If your Samsung TV says “App Not Compatible,” sideloading an Android APK usually will not solve it. Samsung Smart TVs use different app platforms by model year, and an app missing from the TV’s Apps catalog is likely unsupported on that model or in your region. First check compatibility; if the app is already installed but malfunctioning, follow Samsung’s troubleshooting steps.
Why does my Samsung TV say “App Not Compatible”?
Samsung TV app support depends on the TV’s platform generation. Samsung’s developer specifications say 2016 and later Smart TVs run Tizen applications only. Models from 2015 support Tizen apps and retain backward compatibility with legacy apps, while 2010–2014 models use Samsung’s Legacy Platform. Samsung also states that Tizen and Legacy Platform applications are not compatible across those platforms. An Android APK is not a Tizen TV app. If the app was made for Android phones or tablets, installing its APK does not make it compatible with a Samsung TV. An app may also be unavailable because its publisher does not support your exact model, firmware, or region.

Samsung says an app that does not appear in the TV’s Apps catalog is likely incompatible with that model. Availability and menu names can vary by model, software version, and region, so check these details before trying to install anything:

- Full model code and model year: Find the complete model code in the TV’s settings or on its product label. The year and model group help identify its app platform.
- Region: App catalogs can vary by location. Confirm the app publisher offers the app in the TV’s region.
- Firmware: Check whether the TV has a software update available.
- Publisher support: Look for the app publisher’s supported-TV list or ask whether your exact model is supported.
Samsung’s guidance for apps that are missing or not working explains that app availability and menus depend on the model, software version, and region. If the publisher does not support your TV, troubleshooting cannot add that support.
How do I sideload apps on my Samsung TV?
For ordinary consumer use, Samsung does not document a general sideloading method that turns an unsupported app into a compatible one. In particular, a USB stick is not a general app-installation workaround. Samsung describes a separate USB Demo Packaging Tool for developer demonstrations. It packages demo content as .tmg files and uses a license for demo installation; it is not a consumer method for installing arbitrary apps. A USB drive or demo package will not make an Android APK or an unsupported TV app work.
Can I install an APK on a Samsung TV?
No—not as a supported way to install an Android app on a Samsung Smart TV. The APK format is for Android, while Samsung’s 2016-and-later Smart TVs run Tizen applications only. Changing the file extension or copying an APK to USB does not convert it to a Tizen app.

Developers can test suitable Tizen web apps on a Samsung TV using Samsung’s development tools, but that is a different process from consumer sideloading. It does not convert an Android APK into a Tizen application.
What can developers install for testing?
Samsung’s Tizen Studio workflow is intended for developers testing apps built for the compatible Tizen TV platform. Samsung’s application installation guidance describes a process that requires Developer Mode, a computer and TV on the same network, a Tizen Studio connection, and appropriate signing certificates.

Installation can fail for several reasons, including certificate problems. Samsung also notes that modifying a .wgt package can cause installation to fail; rebuild the package if it has been changed. These developer steps are not a remedy for an app that is unsupported on your model, and they do not make Android apps run on Tizen.
How to fix a Samsung TV app that is installed but not working
If the app is already listed on the TV but freezes, will not load, or crashes, Samsung US recommends trying these steps in order. Menu wording and locations may differ by model and software version.

- Cold boot the TV. Restart the TV completely rather than only putting it in standby.
- Update the TV software. Open the TV’s software update settings and install an available update.
- Delete and reinstall the app. Remove the app from the TV, then reinstall it from the Apps catalog if it is available.
- Reset Smart Hub. If the app still fails, use the Smart Hub reset option in the TV’s settings. A reset may require you to sign in to apps again.
These steps address problems with an app that is supported but malfunctioning; they do not make an unsupported app compatible. For account, password, or login problems, contact the app publisher. See Samsung’s app troubleshooting guidance for its recommended sequence.
