Start by finding what is slowing your PC, then try software fixes before spending money on parts. Check CPU, memory and disk use in Task Manager; clear unnecessary background activity; and consider an SSD or RAM upgrade only if it addresses the bottleneck and fits your exact computer. These steps can help, but Microsoft cautions that “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.”
1. Find the bottleneck in Task Manager
Before changing settings or buying hardware, check which resource is busy when the slowdown happens. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, then select Processes. Review the CPU, Memory and Disk columns while reproducing the problem. A single app repeatedly using a large share of a resource may be the cause; consistently high use across many apps can point to a broader workload or hardware limit. Sort by a column to identify the heaviest processes, and close only apps you recognize and do not need.
Microsoft recommends monitoring resource use and investigating processes that consume unusually high CPU, memory or disk capacity in its Windows performance guidance.

2. Reduce the apps that launch at startup
Startup apps can lengthen boot time and continue using resources after you sign in. In Task Manager, open Startup apps, review the list and disable apps you do not need to start automatically. You can also manage startup apps in Settings > Apps > Startup on supported Windows versions.

Do not disable security software or unfamiliar system components just because they appear in the list. If you do not know what an item does, leave it enabled until you identify it.
3. Limit background activity for nonessential apps
Some apps can run tasks or send notifications when you are not actively using them. Where Windows offers background-permission controls for an app, turn them off only for apps that do not need to stay active. The location and available controls vary by Windows version and app; check the app’s settings or its entry in Windows Settings.
4. Free disk space without deleting files blindly
A nearly full system drive can interfere with updates and leave less room for temporary files. Open Settings > System > Storage and review Windows’ cleanup recommendations or Storage Sense options. Inspect categories and files before removing them, especially Downloads and items in the Recycle Bin. Microsoft notes that free-space needs for updates vary by device and update; see its guidance on freeing space for Windows updates.

5. Uninstall apps you no longer use
Removing software you no longer need can recover storage and may reduce background activity. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the label can vary by Windows release), sort or review the list, and uninstall apps you recognize and no longer use. Avoid removing drivers, security components or software whose purpose you cannot identify.
6. Install appropriate Windows and driver updates
Check Settings > Windows Update for available updates, then install them when you are ready for any required restart. Updates can include fixes and performance improvements, but do not guarantee that an older machine will become faster. For model-specific drivers, follow the computer maker’s support instructions rather than using unverified driver-update utilities.
Windows support matters as well as performance: Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Check whether your specific PC is eligible for Windows 11 using Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade preparation guidance. Do not assume eligibility from the PC’s age or apparent speed.

7. Scan for malware
Malware can consume CPU and disk resources, so run a scan with Windows Security or another security product you already trust. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection and choose a scan option. If you suspect an infection, follow the security software’s instructions for handling detections rather than ignoring or manually deleting system files.

Many open apps and browser tabs can compete for memory and processing time. Save your work, close what you are not using, and see whether responsiveness improves. If it does not, restart the PC; this clears temporary working state and can resolve a slowdown caused by a stuck process. A restart is a troubleshooting step, not a substitute for identifying a problem that keeps returning.
9. Use Windows’ built-in drive optimization
Search the Start menu for Defragment and Optimize Drives, open the Windows utility, select the drive and use Optimize if appropriate. Windows manages optimization differently for different drive types, so use its built-in tool rather than forcing a manual defragmentation routine. This is maintenance, not a way to turn an old hard disk into an SSD.

10. Consider an SSD if the PC still uses an HDD
If Windows is installed on a mechanical hard disk, a compatible solid-state drive may address slow booting and storage access. Microsoft describes HDD-based devices as typically slower to use than SSD-based devices, but no universal performance result applies to every PC. Check the computer’s exact model and supported drive interface and physical size before buying; an SSD that does not fit or connect is not an upgrade option.
Back up important files before replacing a drive, cloning it or reinstalling Windows. Kingston discusses the HDD-to-SSD upgrade path in its guide to reviving an old computer and its PC performance overview. If you are not comfortable opening the computer or migrating its data, consider having a qualified repairer do the work.

More RAM can help if Task Manager shows memory is consistently constrained during the work you actually do. It will not fix slow storage, a heavily loaded CPU, an unsupported operating system or an app-specific issue by itself. Before buying, check the computer or motherboard model, supported memory generation and maximum capacity, available slots, and whether existing memory can be replaced or must be retained.

Use the PC maker’s specifications or a model-specific compatibility lookup; laptop and desktop memory are not interchangeable by assumption. Kingston’s RAM upgrade guidance for common PC makers and Crucial’s overview of computer memory needs explain why workload and compatibility matter.
12. Decide whether to repair, repurpose or replace
Use the symptoms and support status together, not age alone, to decide whether more effort is worthwhile. A compatible SSD or RAM upgrade may be sensible if it solves a clear bottleneck and the rest of the PC meets your needs. A motherboard or CPU upgrade can be complex and may not make economic sense on an older system.
- Repair or upgrade: the problem is identified, the part is compatible, and the PC can continue to meet your needs.
- Repurpose: it remains useful for a lighter task even if it is no longer suitable as your main computer.
- Replace: persistent errors, poor battery life, loud or frequent fan activity, inability to receive supported updates, or sustained high resource use make continued use or repair impractical.
Microsoft’s signs that it may be time for a new PC include recurring problems and hardware limitations. Because Windows 10 support has ended, a machine that cannot run a currently supported operating system needs a supported computing plan—not just a performance tune-up.
