Keeper is the more convenient fit if you want a managed vault with built-in syncing, sharing, and administration; KeePass is the better fit if you want to control a local encrypted database and are prepared to manage its storage, backups, and compatible apps. Neither model is automatically safer: the better choice depends on how you secure your account or database, devices, and recovery process.
What is the main difference between Keeper and KeePass?
Keeper is a vendor-managed password vault: the service provides encrypted sync and features for sharing records and administering users. KeePass centers on an encrypted database file that you control. The KeePass model gives you more responsibility for where that file lives, how it is backed up, and how it reaches each device.
Keeper’s comparison page describes its own features and contrasts them with KeePass. Treat those comparisons as vendor claims, not independent test results. The KeePass project’s security documentation is a useful primary source for understanding its database protection and configuration options.
Which one is easier to sync, share, and manage?
Keeper: managed sync and built-in sharing
Keeper describes encrypted vault synchronization, record sharing, and applications for major platforms. Its personal and family plan page lists unlimited device sync and sharing, and a family plan for five users. These are features described by Keeper; check the live plan details for your country before subscribing.
#1 Best Overall
- ✅ PROTECT ONLINE ACCOUNTS – A password manager, two-factor security key, and secure communication token in one, OnlyKey can keep your accounts safe even if your computer or a website is compromised. OnlyKey is open source, verified, and trustworthy.
- ✅ UNIVERSALLY SUPPORTED – Works with all websites including Twitter, Facebook, GitHub, and Google. Onlykey supports multiple methods of two-factor authentication including FIDO2 / U2F, Yubico OTP, TOTP, Challenge-response.
- ✅ PORTABLE PROTECTION – Extremely durable, waterproof, and tamper resistant design allows you to take your OnlyKey with you everywhere.
- ✅ PIN PROTECTED – The PIN used to unlock OnlyKey is entered directly on it. This means that if this device is stolen, data remains secure, after 10 failed attempts to unlock all data is securely erased.
- ✅ EASY LOG IN –No need to remember multiple passwords because by plugging OnlyKey to your computer, it automatically inputs your username and password. It works with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, or Chromebook, just press a button to login securely!
For a family or organization, built-in sharing and centralized administration can reduce the work of coordinating access to a database file. Keeper describes an organization admin console, but the usefulness of its controls depends on the plan and configuration.
KeePass: you arrange the file workflow
KeePass is built around a database file. If you want to use that database across devices, you choose the storage and synchronization method and take responsibility for access controls, backups, and resolving sync conflicts. The KeePass project’s security guidance explains database protection; it does not make those surrounding file-management decisions for you.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Which security model fits your responsibilities?
Keeper’s hosted-vault model
Keeper describes its service as zero-knowledge, with local encryption and encrypted vault sync. Its security documentation says it uses AES-256 and supports multi-factor authentication methods including FIDO2 WebAuthn hardware security keys. These are vendor descriptions of the service’s design and features, not an independent assessment of how every user’s account will fare in practice.
Rank #3
- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
With a managed service, your account security, devices, and recovery choices still matter. Multi-factor authentication can add a second step to sign-in; a physical security key is optional, and compatibility depends on the account and device.
KeePass’s database-file model
KeePass documents an encrypted database and a key-derivation process that can be configured to make database opening more resource-intensive. Its security page discusses Argon2 and advises tuning memory and iteration settings to the least capable device that needs to open the file. Follow the project’s current guidance rather than copying generic settings: stronger resource demands can also mean slower opening or problems on less capable devices.
Rank #4
Protecting the file does not by itself protect a weak database key, an insecure device, an exposed copy, or a missing backup. The user who controls the file also needs to keep its storage, sync, and recovery arrangements secure.
How to think about “safe”
Local storage is not proof that KeePass is insecure, and a managed service is not automatically safer simply because it handles synchronization. KeePass can reduce reliance on a vendor-hosted vault while placing more operational decisions on you. Keeper offers a more managed workflow, while its users still depend on their account security, devices, recovery choices, and the service. Choose according to which responsibilities you can reliably handle.
Best Value
- FIDO-ONLY FUNCTIONALITY: Supports FIDO2 (passkeys) and FIDO U2F protocols for passwordless and second-factor authentication. Does not support OTP, TOTP, Smart Card (PIV), or other advanced features - upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series for extended functionality

- DEVICE & OS COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux. Works seamlessly with supported services like Google and Microsoft accounts, and major password managers. See the full compatibility list at "Works With YubiKey"
- DURABLE & RELIABLE: Resistant to tampering, water, and crushing. No batteries or network connectivity required, offering dependable authentication without any downtime. Securely manufactured in USA & Sweden
- Yubico Authenticator App - Fingerprint enrollment, passkey management and PIN configuration available via the app app - Upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series to generate one-time-passwords (OTP) via Yubico Authenticator and for advanced compatibility (OATH, PIV)
Which should you choose for your situation?
Choose Keeper if convenience and shared access matter most
- You want sync across devices without designing a file-sync workflow.
- You expect to share records with family members or need organization-level administration.
- You prefer a managed service and are comfortable checking its plan terms and securing an online account.
Choose KeePass if you want direct control of the database
- You prefer a locally managed database file.
- You can choose and maintain suitable storage, synchronization, and backup arrangements.
- You are willing to select compatible clients and verify that they work for your devices and needs.
For a technically confident single-device user, KeePass’s file-based design may be an advantage if the setup and backup responsibilities are acceptable. For a team or family, compare the effort of managing file access with the value of built-in sharing and centralized controls; technical confidence alone does not make file-based coordination the better choice.
What do Keeper plans and trials cost in 2026?
The Keeper personal and family pricing page reviewed for this comparison did not display numeric plan prices. Check the current price for your country and confirm which features are included, including whether extras such as monitoring or file storage cost more. Keeper’s trial page advertises a 30-day trial and apps for iOS, Android, Mac, PC, and Linux; offers and platform details can change, so confirm them on the live page.
KeePass is file-based, but your chosen storage service or third-party client may affect your overall cost. The available information does not establish a precise, like-for-like current price comparison.
