Bitwarden is the stronger default for individuals and families who want a capable free plan or lower listed prices; Keeper is worth considering for its paid consumer plans or broader business security platform. Neither is a proven winner for security or ease of use: the available product information does not provide independent, directly comparable testing. Prices and features can change, so confirm current terms before subscribing.
Which password manager is better?
For personal use, Bitwarden has the clearest advantage if you want to start free and use your vault across devices. Keeper Free is much more restricted. For a household, Bitwarden Families offers six premium accounts and unlimited sharing and collections at a lower listed annual price than Keeper Family. For organizations, the right choice depends on required administration, integrations, deployment options, and the total cost of needed features—not on a broad claim that one service is more secure.
This comparison uses vendor pricing and product documentation, not hands-on testing or independent comparative security findings. The product claims below should be read in that context.

These are listed prices from the vendors’ pages, accessed October 7, 2026. Bitwarden states its prices in USD before tax and bills the consumer plans annually. | Plan | Listed price | What the cited plan information establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Bitwarden Premium | $19.80 per year, billed annually in USD before tax | Individual paid plan. See Bitwarden’s pricing page. |
| Bitwarden Families | $47.88 per year, billed annually in USD before tax | Up to six users, with unlimited sharing and collections. See Bitwarden’s pricing page. |
| Keeper Unlimited | $42.99 per year | Listed in Keeper’s support article; geography and possible checkout discounts are not fully specified there. See Keeper’s pricing support article. |
| Keeper Family | $91.99 per year after the consumer trial | Listed in the same Keeper support article; verify the checkout price and renewal terms. |
| Bitwarden Teams | $4 per user per month, billed annually | Business plan pricing listed by Bitwarden. See Bitwarden’s pricing page. |
| Bitwarden Enterprise | $6 per user per month, billed annually | Business plan pricing listed by Bitwarden. See Bitwarden’s pricing page. |
The prices are not a complete like-for-like comparison: plans differ in what they include, and the Keeper article does not establish every checkout condition. Compare the features you actually need and the final renewal amount, rather than choosing from the headline price alone.
What does each free plan allow?
Bitwarden Free
Bitwarden says its core service is always free. Its current plan materials describe unlimited passwords and devices, along with unlimited logins, notes, cards, and identities. That makes it the more practical free option if you need to access a vault from more than one device. See Bitwarden’s pricing page and its plan descriptions.
Keeper Free
Keeper Free is limited to one mobile device and ten records. Keeper’s comparison page also says the free plan lacks unlimited sync, sharing, a browser extension, and web-vault access, while including two-factor authentication. See Keeper’s comparison page.

If you want a free vault for ongoing use across devices, Bitwarden’s stated limits make it the more straightforward fit. Keeper Free may suit someone who only needs a small vault on one mobile device, but its record and access restrictions are substantial.
Which service fits a family?
Bitwarden Families is listed at $47.88 per year for up to six users. The current pricing page describes six premium accounts and unlimited sharing and collections. That makes it a strong listed-value option for households that want to share credentials while keeping individual accounts. Check the current plan page for the precise terms before buying, since the detailed plan article’s descriptions were current as of June 4, 2024, and older details can become stale. See current pricing and the plan article.
Keeper Family is listed at $91.99 per year after its consumer trial in Keeper’s support article. Because that article does not fully specify geography or potential checkout discounts, confirm the price in your region and the renewal amount before subscribing. The cited details do not establish a directly comparable set of family-sharing limits for Keeper, so do not assume its plan matches Bitwarden’s sharing terms.

What matters for a small organization?
Start with the controls your organization must operate, then verify they are available in the specific plan and calculate any add-on costs. A longer feature list is not, by itself, evidence of better security.
- Administration and provisioning: Check identity-provider integration, directory synchronization, SCIM provisioning, centralized ownership, and the process for onboarding and removing users.
- Visibility and access: Confirm the audit or event logs, granular permissions, enterprise policies, and credential-sharing controls your team requires.
- Deployment: Determine whether self-hosting or passwordless single sign-on integration is necessary and whether the relevant plan supports it.
- Recovery and support: Establish how users regain access, how administrators handle account recovery, and what support response the organization needs.
- Compliance and total cost: Map regulatory requirements to specific controls, then include paid add-ons and services in the cost comparison.
Bitwarden business capabilities
Bitwarden lists centralized ownership and management, secure credential sharing, event logs, directory synchronization, and SCIM provisioning for Teams. Enterprise adds granular access control, passwordless SSO integration, enterprise policies, and self-hosting flexibility. These are vendor-listed capabilities; verify the current plan details against your deployment requirements. See Bitwarden’s business plan descriptions.
Keeper’s broader platform
Keeper positions its enterprise offering as a broader security platform that includes privileged access management, secrets management, secure database access, and compliance capabilities. This is Keeper’s own description on its comparison page, which promotes Keeper; validate each capability, plan requirement, and cost against your organization’s needs.

What can be concluded about security and usability?
Bitwarden’s pricing page describes open-source security, zero-knowledge encryption, advanced two-step login, and passkey management. Those are vendor descriptions, not independent proof that Bitwarden is categorically safer. Keeper’s comparative platform claims likewise do not establish that Keeper is more secure. The available evidence does not support an overall security ranking or a reliable day-to-day usability winner.
For either service, assess the security controls you will actually use: account recovery, two-step login options, device compatibility, sharing permissions, and the organization’s administration requirements. A feature being listed does not show how it performs in your particular setup.

See Bitwarden’s Keeper import instructions and Keeper’s comparison page for its claim of Bitwarden import support.
Do you need a hardware security key?
No. A hardware key is an optional way to add two-step login, not a requirement for either password manager. Bitwarden lists hardware security keys among its supported two-step-login methods; Keeper identifies FIDO2 security keys as a paid-plan feature. Confirm compatibility with your account, browser, and devices before buying. See Bitwarden’s plan details and Keeper’s feature comparison.
