Yes—KeePass is still worth using if you want a password database you control as a file and are comfortable managing its storage, backups, and device access yourself. The official project lists KeePass 2.61.1, released May 1, 2026. Its security design is substantial, but it does not provide effortless, universal synchronization: you choose how to protect and move the database, and which apps to use on mobile.
What KeePass is—and what is current
KeePass is a password manager built around an encrypted database file. The official download page lists KeePass 2.61.1, released May 1, 2026, with installer and portable packages. The project lists Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11, as well as Mono-based support for Linux, macOS, BSD, and other Unix-like systems. It lists x86, x64, and ARM64 builds; these are the project’s stated compatibility details, not a guarantee for every package or configuration. KeePass downloads
The desktop application is free to download. “KeePass” can also refer more loosely to third-party apps that open compatible database files. The official site lists Android options including KeePassDroid, KeePass2Android, and KeePassDX, and Apple-platform options including OneKeePass, KeePassium, and Strongbox. That listing does not mean the apps are official KeePass clients or that they share the same maintenance, privacy, pricing, or features. KeePass downloads and mobile apps
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow secure is KeePass?
KeePass encrypts the database as a whole, including usernames, URLs, notes, and other stored information—not only password fields. For KeePass 2.x, the project documents AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryption, with HMAC-SHA-256 used to check ciphertext integrity. KDBX 4 supports Argon2 as well as AES-KDF, allowing the database’s key-derivation settings to make password guessing more costly. KeePass features · KeePass security · KDBX 4 help

- Medium Size & Ample Space: Measuring 5.3"x7.6", this password book fits easily into purses, handy for accessibility. Stores up to 560 entries and offers spacious writing space, perfect for seniors. It also provides extra pages to record additional information, such as email settings, card information, and more.

- Discreet Design for Secure Password Organization: With no title on the front to keep your passwords safe, it also has space to write password hints instead of the password itself! Finished with an elastic band for safe closure.
That design does not make the database invulnerable. A weak or reused master password, an exposed key file, an unlocked or compromised device, or an unsafe backup or sync process can undermine the protection. KeePass’s KDBX 4 settings let users configure Argon2 iterations, memory, and parallelism; there is no single setting that is best for every device and every compatible app. Choose settings with your devices and compatibility needs in mind, and test that you can still open the database on each client you rely on.
Choose and protect the unlock method
KeePass can use a master password, a key file, or combined key components. A key file adds a separate access requirement only when it is kept separately from the database and protected with reliable backups. If you lose the key file, you may lose access to the database; if you store it alongside the database in an exposed location, it may add little practical protection. KeePass features

What using KeePass involves day to day
KeePass offers password groups, search, a password generator, Auto-Type, clipboard clearing, import and export, plugins, and a portable ZIP build. The database is a single file, which gives you flexibility over where it lives and how it is backed up. The trade-off is that you own those decisions rather than receiving a guaranteed, automatic sync workflow from the desktop application. KeePass features · KeePass downloads

Plan file storage and synchronization
Decide which device or location holds the working database, how changes reach your other devices, and how you will recover an earlier copy. If you use a file-sync service or removable storage, consider how it handles simultaneous edits and what happens when a device is lost. The official pages describe a portable application and list mobile clients, but they do not establish that every sync arrangement is automatic or conflict-free.
A USB flash drive is optional, not a KeePass requirement. It can carry the portable package or a separate key file, but removable media can be lost or damaged; protect and back up anything important stored on it. KeePass portable mode

Check mobile and browser workflows before committing
There is no single official KeePass mobile client listed by the project. Choose a third-party app that supports the database format and features you need, then test opening, editing, and restoring a copy of your database before making it your only mobile access route. Browser and autofill workflows likewise depend on the client or configuration you choose.

Plugins can extend KeePass, but most are written by independent authors, and the KeePass project says it cannot check every plugin for bugs or malicious code. KeePass or KeePassXC?
KeePassXC is a separate password-manager project, not a newer release of KeePass. Its documentation says it supports KDBX 3.1 and KDBX 4 and provides browser integration. KeePassXC announced version 2.7.12 on March 10, 2026; its audits page lists an ANSSI Security Visa for version 2.7.9. Those are KeePassXC-specific facts, not a certification or security review of KeePass 2.x, and they do not establish a head-to-head test. KeePassXC documentation · KeePassXC 2.7.12 release announcement · KeePassXC audits
The projects differ in their clients, browser workflows, and plugin ecosystems. KeePassXC cautions that many KeePass 2 plugins are poorly maintained or have known unpatched vulnerabilities, and notes that plugins do not receive the same review as KeePassXC’s own code. This is a warning about plugin ecosystems, not a claim that KeePass itself has a known vulnerability. KeePassXC documentation
Compare the options on what affects your own routine:
- Database and format: KeePass and KeePassXC both work with KDBX databases, but confirm that the versions and features you use are supported in each app you plan to run.
- Sync and backup: Decide whether you want to manage the file and its backups or prefer a hosted service to operate synchronization.
- Browser and mobile access: Check the actual browser integration and mobile clients available for the workflow you need.
- Extensions: Consider whether you need plugins and how much trust and maintenance responsibility you are willing to take on.
- Setup effort: Choose based on whether local-file control or a more managed experience matters more to you.
A hosted password manager may suit someone who prioritizes turnkey synchronization, polished mobile apps, and browser autofill. That is a category-level trade-off; current plans and features vary, so compare the specific service you are considering rather than assuming they are all alike.
Who should choose KeePass?
- Choose KeePass if you value control over a local database file, want a portable desktop option, and are prepared to manage backups, syncing, and client selection.
- Consider KeePassXC if its browser integration and application workflow better fit your needs while keeping a KDBX-based setup.
- Consider a hosted manager if you want synchronization and mobile or browser access handled as part of a more managed service.
The official materials document KeePass’s capabilities and limits, but they do not provide a named, current independent comparative security test of KeePass 2.61.1. Encryption algorithms and a current release are useful facts, not proof that any password manager is invulnerable or the best choice for every user.
