To convert a Word document to Markdown without uploading it, install Pandoc and run pandoc input.docx -t markdown -o output.md. The command reads the DOCX locally and writes a separate Markdown file. Then inspect the result: Markdown preserves text and supported document structure, not Word’s full page layout or every feature.
Convert a DOCX file with Pandoc
Pandoc is the most direct local command-line option in the documented approaches here. Its project demonstrates converting DOCX to Markdown, including documents with math. The source filename lets Pandoc identify the input format; -t markdown explicitly sets the output format. See the Pandoc demos and Pandoc Getting Started guide.

Open a terminal in the folder containing your Word file, or use full paths to the files.

Run
pandoc input.docx -t markdown -o output.md, replacinginput.docxwith your file’s name andoutput.mdwith the desired output path. -
Open the Markdown file in the editor or publishing system where you plan to use it and check the conversion.
Using a different output filename leaves the original DOCX intact. Pandoc supports multiple Markdown flavors; if your destination requires a specific flavor, check the User’s Guide for the version you installed rather than assuming the default output matches it.

Markdown describes text and document structure; it does not reproduce Word’s complete page layout. Headings, lists, links, tables, images, equations, footnotes, comments, tracked changes, and custom styles may need different levels of review. The available documentation demonstrates conversion capabilities but does not establish a guarantee that every Word feature will transfer faithfully.
Word formatting also matters. A heading that looks large because of manual font formatting may not be recognized like a paragraph assigned a semantic Heading style. If the output is unexpectedly flat, inspect the styles used in Word and the resulting heading hierarchy.
Review the output before relying on it

Start with a representative copy of the document, especially if it contains tables, images, footnotes, equations, comments, tracked changes, or custom styles.

Check heading levels and whether nested lists remain nested.

Follow links and inspect tables, image references, and math in the target editor or publishing system.

Compare important passages with the DOCX and manually correct any missing or altered structure.
Other local conversion approaches
Mammoth: convert through semantic HTML
Mammoth converts DOCX to HTML. Its documentation describes mapping common Word styles, such as Heading 1, to HTML headings, with style maps available for custom mappings. It can write HTML to standard output or a file and can save images to an output directory.
Mammoth’s direct Markdown feature is deprecated. Its maintainers recommend converting DOCX to HTML first and then using a separate HTML-to-Markdown library, a pipeline that may suit users who want to customize semantic structure. Review the style mapping and image handling for your document.

MD Convert describes a browser workflow that uses Mammoth.js to turn Word styles into semantic HTML and Turndown to produce CommonMark or GFM in a Web Worker. Its page says files are read locally and not uploaded, and lists support for headings, lists, emphasis, links, blockquotes, and GFM pipe tables. It also says Word-specific XML details are discarded. These are the service’s own descriptions, not an independent security or compatibility audit.
For a sensitive document, do not treat a generic “local” label as proof. Verify the specific tool and its workflow, and avoid using a browser converter unless its privacy claims meet your needs.
When a DOCX library is not enough
python-docx provides programmatic access to DOCX documents, but its documentation does not establish it as a turnkey Markdown exporter and notes limitations around some document features. If you use it, expect to build and verify the extraction and Markdown-generation steps rather than assuming a direct, complete export.
