Missing characters or unexpected text after a minimal Arch Linux and Hyprland setup may come down to font availability—but the symptom alone does not prove that a font is the cause. Hyprland is the Wayland compositor; fonts are discovered and matched by font libraries and by the applications that use them. Start by identifying the symptom, then check what Fontconfig sees and which face it selects.
What Hyprland does—and what it does not do
Hyprland is a Wayland compositor, not a font installer. Its installation and configuration do not guarantee that a particular typeface or every glyph you need is present. Fontconfig provides available-font lists and rendering configuration to applications that use it; applications then choose fonts according to their configuration and the glyphs available.
As ArchWiki puts it, “Fontconfig is a library designed to provide a list of available fonts to applications, as well as configuration for how fonts get rendered.” A minimal installation may need an additional font package or a manually installed font if the requested family or required glyph is absent. That is a possibility, not a universal property of minimal Arch installations. See ArchWiki’s Hyprland guide and Font configuration.

First identify the kind of text problem
Before changing fonts, distinguish among missing characters, an unexpected typeface, and text that looks blurry or distorted. These symptoms can have different causes, so replacing a font is not a general fix for every text-rendering problem.

- Missing characters or empty boxes: check whether a font available to the application contains the needed glyphs.
- An unexpected typeface: inspect which face Fontconfig matches for the requested family and whether the application follows Fontconfig’s selection.
- Fuzzy text: check display scaling and DPI as well as font selection. ArchWiki’s troubleshooting guidance notes that a DPI mismatch can make display output fuzzy.
Check Fontconfig’s font list and match result
Run these commands in a terminal in your user session:
fc-listlists fonts Fontconfig recognizes.fc-match <family>shows the face Fontconfig selects for a family request. Replace<family>with the family name you want to check.
For a language-specific font listing or a match based on a particular Unicode character, ArchWiki’s Font configuration guide documents language-filtered listings and charset-based matching. These checks narrow the problem: if the intended font is absent from Fontconfig’s list, investigate installation and font directories; if the match is unexpected, investigate matching rules, glyph coverage, and application behavior.

Install the font at the right scope
For a font available in an enabled Arch repository, prefer installing its package through the package manager. ArchWiki recommends package management for repository fonts and describes creating packages for fonts that are not in the repositories. Package-managed installation is easier to track and remove than copying files into package-owned locations.

Do not manually put font files under /usr/share/fonts/; that location is managed by the package manager. Fontconfig scans standard font locations recursively. ArchWiki’s Fonts guide covers package and manual installation choices.
Refresh discovery, then retest the affected app
After adding font files, run fc-cache if Fontconfig has not picked them up. A cache rebuild is not always necessary: software using Fontconfig often handles cache updates automatically. Restart the affected application if the new font still does not appear; an application that was already open may not reflect changes immediately. Then rerun fc-list or fc-match to check discovery and selection.

If the problem remains
If Fontconfig lists the intended font and matches the expected face, but one application still renders text incorrectly, look at that application’s font settings and behavior before attributing the problem to Hyprland. Not every application uses Fontconfig in the same way. If the text is blurry rather than missing or substituted, investigate display scaling and DPI instead of assuming a glyph-coverage problem.
