Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s reported New Game Plus route unlocks after you finish the story: start another playthrough on Carnage Mode. A September 7, 2026 guide says many abilities, upgrades, and unlocks carry over, but several progression systems reset—and Carnage cannot be lowered once the new run begins. Capcom’s official announcements establish the game’s release and platforms, but do not confirm these detailed NG+ mechanics, so treat the carryover list as guide-reported rather than officially verified.
How to unlock and start New Game Plus
According to Destructoid’s September 7, 2026 guide, complete the main story, then begin a new playthrough on Carnage Mode. The guide describes Carnage as the hard difficulty and the route for NG+.

Capcom announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword for September 25, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but its official announcement does not document NG+ unlock conditions. The mechanics here are based on the guide, not an official Capcom confirmation. See Capcom’s announcement.

The Destructoid guide reports that these abilities and unlocks carry over:

“Most” matters: the guide separately lists equipment enhancement materials among the things that do not carry over, so its claim is not that every material remains in your inventory. It also cautions that story-gated features still have to be unlocked during the new run. For example, Haori Pouch switching may remain unavailable until you reach the relevant point in the story.
What resets or does not carry over?

The guide distinguishes unlocked appearances from equipment levels: clothing and sword appearances are reported to carry over, while Clothing and Weapon levels reset. Do not assume an unlocked item’s upgrade level or every related material survives simply because its appearance does.
Can you change difficulty after starting NG+?
Destructoid reports that during a first playthrough, you can switch between Action and Story at a Spirit Mirror. Carnage, however, cannot be reduced after the NG+ run begins. That makes the choice consequential: start Carnage only if you are prepared to keep playing at that setting. Difficulty controls and NG+ details can change with game updates, and the guide is the only source here for this restriction.

What is confirmed about the game itself?
Capcom describes the game as a dark-fantasy adventure starring Miyamoto Musashi in an Edo-era Kyoto transformed by Malice. Director Satoru Nihei said the universe was rebuilt so newcomers can start without knowledge of earlier games, with no direct storyline connections to previous entries. That background may help first-time players, but it does not establish anything about NG+ carryover.
For broader combat context, an Xbox Wire interview discusses the updated risk-and-reward timing of Issen and the ability to absorb souls while moving. Producer Akihito Kadowaki describes aiming to balance satisfying action with difficulty and mentions Story and Action modes. Those comments concern the game’s design, not NG+ rules.
