Netflix uses data across four connected parts of its service: deciding what to recommend, arranging the homepage, delivering video through its network, and evaluating product changes. Its public documentation describes some recommendation signals, while engineering articles from 2016 and 2017 explain delivery and experimentation practices at those times. These sources show the broad system, not every current model or data practice.

How does Netflix recommend shows and movies?

Netflix says recommendations draw on more than a member’s watch history. The company identifies title details such as genre, categories, actors, and release year, alongside viewing context and engagement. Its Help Center says age and gender are not used in recommendation decisions. Netflix Help Center: How Netflix’s Recommendations System Works

  • Engagement: visits to the service, titles started or completed, and ratings such as a thumbs-up.
  • Title attributes: information including genre, categories, cast, and release year.
  • Context: time of day, preferred languages, and the device being used.
  • Watch duration: how long a title was enjoyed, as described by Netflix.

Netflix says more recent engagement can count more than older activity, and that ongoing feedback updates its recommendations. This is a description of recommendation inputs, not a complete account of all information Netflix collects or its model architecture.

What happens on a new profile?

Netflix says a new account or profile can optionally begin with a selection of liked titles. If a viewer skips that step, the service starts with a diverse set of popular titles. Later engagement can supersede those initial preferences.

Why does the homepage look different for different members?

Personalization affects the layout as well as the individual titles. Netflix says its system chooses which rows to show, selects titles for each row, and ranks those titles. The result is an interface in which both the selection and placement of recommendations can vary.

How does Netflix keep streaming smoothly?

Recommendation is only one part of the data system. Netflix also has to decide where video files should be stored and how they should be delivered. In a 2016 account, Netflix described Open Connect, its content delivery network, as serving video through connections with internet service providers (ISPs) and appliances located within ISP networks. Popularity models helped determine which files to place on which servers and when; content could be moved during off-peak periods and replicated closer to viewers. Netflix Open Connect

These are Netflix’s historical figures for 2016, not current scale estimates.

How does the player adapt to network conditions?

A 2017 Netflix engineering article described titles encoded into files at different bitrates. A client-side adaptive streaming algorithm could then select a bitrate in response to network conditions. Lowering or raising the bitrate is a trade-off: it can affect picture quality, while the player also needs to limit startup delay, rebuffers, and playback errors. • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

The article discussed measuring several quality-of-experience outcomes rather than optimizing a single one. It also noted that an encoding change may affect content types and devices differently, making validation across varied titles and clients important. Its description documents Netflix’s published approach in 2017; it does not establish that every implementation detail remains unchanged.

How does Netflix test whether a change works?

Prediction and evaluation answer different questions. A recommendation model can identify patterns associated with a viewer’s likely preferences. An experiment can help estimate whether a specific product change caused a measured difference. A correlation between two behaviors, by itself, does not prove that a change caused an outcome.

In a June 13, 2017 article, Netflix Technology Blog author Nirmal Govind described experimentation across streaming quality, the interface, personalized recommendations, promotion, marketing, and video artwork. Netflix described randomized A/B tests for many changes. For some network changes, such as cache algorithms, traffic could not feasibly be randomized, so the article says Netflix used quasi-experiments and causal-inference methods. Why test trade-offs, not just one metric?

The 2017 article described questions such as whether a faster startup time was worth a lower initial picture quality, and whether better quality or fewer interruptions affected viewing or retention. These examples illustrate why a change can improve one outcome while worsening another, and why technical measures and member responses may need separate evaluation. They are examples from that article, not a claim about Netflix’s present-day test design.

What has Netflix said about newer discovery features?

On May 7, 2025, Netflix announced a redesigned TV homepage intended to make recommendations more responsive to members’ interests in the moment. It also said it was exploring an opt-in generative-AI search feature on iOS, with conversational requests such as “I want something funny and upbeat.” Netflix described that search feature as a small beta at the time; the announcement alone does not establish its current availability or rollout by region. Netflix: A More Intuitive Netflix Homepage

Chief Product Officer Eunice Kim described the redesign this way: “The new Netflix TV experience is still the one you know and love — just better,”. That statement expresses the product-design goal, not technical evidence about how Netflix’s data systems work.

How the parts fit together

Function What data helps decide What members may notice
Discovery and ranking Viewing and rating feedback, title attributes, time, language, device, and watch duration Which homepage rows appear, which titles they contain, and their order
Delivery Predicted content popularity and where viewers connect to the network Video stored nearer to viewers through Open Connect and ISP connections
Playback quality Network conditions and quality measures such as delay, picture quality, rebuffers, and errors Bitrate selection, startup experience, and interruptions
Evaluation Randomized experiment assignments where feasible, or quasi-experimental comparisons where they are not Evidence about whether a change affected technical or member outcomes

Together, these functions explain how Netflix’s data use extends beyond choosing a title: it can shape what appears, support where video is served from, guide playback adaptation, and help assess changes. The public accounts cited here offer examples and stated recommendation signals, but do not disclose every internal model, current implementation, or data practice.
