Auracast lets a compatible audio source broadcast sound for multiple nearby listeners to join, rather than pairing with only one set of headphones. It can make compatible headphones useful for public TVs, venue announcements, tours, and shared listening—but only when a compatible transmitter and a way to find and join its broadcast are available.

If you are buying headphones, treat Auracast as a worthwhile forward-looking feature, not a reason to overlook fit, sound, noise cancellation, battery life, or compatibility with your own devices. A Bluetooth version number alone does not prove that a product supports Auracast.

What Auracast does

Auracast is Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast audio. A compatible transmitter sends one or more audio streams, and multiple compatible receivers can join a broadcast while they are in range. That differs from the familiar one-to-one Bluetooth connection used when you pair headphones directly with a phone.

The Bluetooth SIG specifies Auracast through the Public Broadcast Profile (PBP). A product needs the relevant Bluetooth Core Specification 5.2 features and PBP support; seeing “Bluetooth 5.2” or a later version in a specification is not, by itself, evidence of Auracast support. Bluetooth SIG’s Auracast overview and FAQ explain the profile and compatibility requirements.

How a listener joins a broadcast

  1. A transmitter advertises and sends audio. It could be a public-address system, television, or another supported audio source. A headphone receiver cannot create a broadcast on its own.
  2. An Auracast assistant helps the listener find it. The assistant scans for broadcasts and provides an interface to choose one. Depending on the product and implementation, this could be a phone, smartwatch, hearing-aid remote, or software interface.
  3. The receiver joins the selected stream. After selection, the assistant supplies the receiver with the information it needs to join. The source, discovery interface, and headphones therefore all need to work together. The Bluetooth SIG describes this discovery and joining flow.

Where Auracast-compatible headphones could be useful

Public TVs and shared audio

Where a compatible transmitter is installed, listeners could hear audio from a public TV or share a personal broadcast with nearby compatible receivers. This is different from simply handing someone a second pair of ordinary Bluetooth headphones: the source must support Auracast transmission, and each listener needs a compatible way to join.

Announcements, tours, and language streams

A venue could broadcast public-address audio directly to compatible headphones or hearing devices. A tour or multilingual service could offer audio streams for visitors to select. The Bluetooth SIG identifies airports, cinemas, lecture halls, conference centers, houses of worship, silent screens, tours, and multilingual services as potential uses. These are supported use cases, not a promise that any particular venue has installed the equipment. Bluetooth SIG’s overview of Auracast use cases describes them.

Assistive listening

Auracast can provide an additional route for people who want to hear venue audio through compatible headphones or hearing devices. Its usefulness in practice depends on local installation, the receiver and discovery options available, and how a venue communicates its broadcasts. The technology does not mean every public-address system is already accessible through headphones.

Which headphones and devices are listed as compatible?

Bluetooth SIG’s informational product directory and its August 2025 paper list receiver examples. The directory’s listings and product availability can change, so confirm the exact model, generation, market, and firmware with the manufacturer before buying. A listing as a receiver does not establish that the same product is also an Auracast assistant or transmitter.

What to check before buying

  • Verify Auracast receive support for the exact product. Look for explicit support, not just a Bluetooth version number or a general “Bluetooth LE Audio” claim.
  • Check how you will discover broadcasts. Find out whether you need a particular phone, app, remote, or other assistant, and whether it works with your headphones.
  • Confirm there is a source you can use. Your intended TV, venue, or other source needs an Auracast transmitter. Receiver support in headphones does not add transmission to that source.
  • Compare the everyday headphone essentials. Fit, sound, noise cancellation, battery life, price, and compatibility with your phone still determine whether a pair suits you. The available product listings do not establish a universal best model.
  • Recheck support before purchase. Product details and availability can change; verify the market-specific model and its current firmware information with the manufacturer.

Can older headphones or a TV get Auracast through an update?

Not necessarily. Bluetooth SIG says field upgrades depend on the device’s underlying capabilities and the supplier’s product strategy. Some products may be upgradeable, while others need new hardware; the SIG notes that categories such as TVs may require a hardware upgrade. Do not assume that a software update will add the necessary radio features or PBP support.

If a TV or other source cannot transmit Auracast natively, a separate transmitter may be an option. Bluetooth SIG describes plug-and-play transmitters and gives examples such as USB dongles, 3.5 mm adapters, dedicated TV streamers, and portable microphones. Creative BT-W6 and Avantree Voyager are named transmitter examples in its August 2025 paper. Before choosing an adapter, verify its input matches the source, its supported role is transmission, and its compatibility with the intended receiver and setup. Bluetooth SIG’s FAQ discusses adding transmitter support, while its 2025 paper lists accessory examples.

How many listeners can join, and how far does it reach?

Bluetooth SIG says an unlimited number of in-range receivers can join a broadcast. “Unlimited” describes the broadcast model; it does not mean unlimited range or coverage. The FAQ describes receivers joining when they are in range of a nearby transmitter, and actual range depends on the transmitter and environment. There is no universal venue-wide distance to assume without specifications for the particular installation. See the SIG FAQ for its qualification.

Is Auracast already available in public venues?

Deployments have begun, but that does not make Auracast common everywhere. Bluetooth SIG’s August 2025 paper reports that three Sydney Opera House venues deployed it in March 2025, Bristol Temple Meads tested it for station audio and announcements, and Birmingham Hippodrome used it for show audio and audio description. Those examples show real deployments and trials; they do not establish local availability at other venues. Check directly with the venue before relying on a broadcast.
