NordPass describes a zero-knowledge design in which your data is encrypted on your device before it is uploaded, and says your Master Password and encryption and decryption keys never reach its servers. That is a meaningful security design, but it is a vendor description—not proof that every component is secure or that your account is safe from every threat. The available information also names an independent Cure53 audit without providing the current report’s date, scope, findings, or remediation details.
What protection does NordPass say it uses?
NordPass’s security documentation describes a sequence of keys and encryption steps rather than a single password protecting the vault. The company says encryption takes place on your device before data is uploaded, and describes the system as zero-knowledge. These are NordPass’s claims about its architecture; they should not be read as independent verification of the implementation or as a guarantee against a compromised device, phishing, or software defects. - Key pair: NordPass says each user has public and private encryption keys. The private key is encrypted locally with XChaCha20-Poly1305-IETF.
- Master Key: Argon2id, using a 16-byte salt, derives a Master Key from the Master Password. NordPass says this Master Key is used to decrypt the private key.
- Vault contents: After unlock, the private key is used to decrypt a data encryption key, which protects vault contents.
- Locking: NordPass says the private key is wiped from memory when the app locks.
NordPass Support states: “Your Master Password, encryption, and decryption keys never reach our servers.” Treat that as the company’s description of its service, not an independently verified finding. The support statement is at Does NordPass save passwords on their servers?
What does the independent audit evidence establish?
NordPass’s feature page says the service has successfully undergone an independent security audit by Cure53. The page available for this review does not provide the full current audit report or establish its date, scope, findings, or remediation details. It therefore supports the limited conclusion that NordPass reports an independent audit—not a conclusion about exactly which versions, platforms, or infrastructure were examined, or what the audit found. When evaluating a password manager, ask for the audit report itself and check its publication date, scope, and whether findings and remediation are described. An audit is useful evidence, but it is not a standing guarantee that later releases are free of vulnerabilities.
Which account protections and vault data are described?
A third-party review published by Tom’s Guide on October 3, 2026, reports that NordPass supports multifactor authentication with one-time-password apps and U2F hardware keys. That supports considering a FIDO U2F security key as an account-protection option, but it does not establish compatibility with any particular model. NordPass’s feature page describes vault storage for passwords, passkeys, credit card details, and other data. See NordPass Password Vault. A password manager can protect stored data, but it cannot by itself prevent someone from tricking you into disclosing a password or protect an already-compromised device.

NordPass also publishes a technical-documentation landing page titled Business whitepaper. Its existence alone does not establish details beyond the security claims described above.
