A Chromebook can work well as your everyday computer if your essential tasks run in a browser and your apps and peripherals are compatible with ChromeOS. Its automatic updates and long, model-specific support schedule are practical advantages. The main drawbacks are desktop-software compatibility and tradeoffs that can affect older devices. Check the exact model’s update end date and confirm your must-have apps and equipment before relying on one as your main PC.
What makes a Chromebook a good fit for everyday use?
Chromebooks are best suited to a browser-centered routine: email, documents, communication, and other services you use on the web. If that describes most of your day, the browser-first setup may be straightforward. This does not mean every desktop program is available on ChromeOS; compatibility depends on the individual app and how you need to use it.
Developers may also find a Chromebook useful if their exact device supports ChromeOS’s Linux development environment and their tools work within its capabilities. Device support and Linux features vary, so check both before making that part of your decision.
Pros of using a Chromebook as your main computer
Updates are designed to happen with little manual work
When connected to the internet, a Chromebook checks for and downloads ChromeOS updates. You restart the device to complete an update. Google says these updates provide security improvements and new features. Google’s Chromebook update instructions explain the process.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Google publishes a long update policy, but dates depend on the model
Google’s current policy provides ten years of updates for ChromeOS devices, measured from the platform release date—not necessarily from the date you buy a particular unit. The remaining support period therefore depends on the exact model. Google says the device’s last update date appears in the Update schedule in ChromeOS settings; you can also check the Chromebook update schedule.
Linux tools are available on supported devices
ChromeOS can provide a Linux development environment with command-line tools, editors, and IDEs on supported Chromebooks. That can expand the types of development work a device can handle, but it does not make every Chromebook equivalent to a Linux desktop. Google’s Linux setup guidance lists device-dependent availability and limitations, including camera support and hardware acceleration within that environment.

Cons and limitations to consider
Desktop apps and peripherals need a compatibility check
Do not assume that a Windows or macOS program has a ChromeOS version that meets your needs. Before buying, identify the apps and peripherals you rely on and confirm that they work in the form you intend to use—web, Android, or Linux, where available. If you plan to use a Linux alternative, check that your Chromebook supports the environment and the capabilities your workflow requires.

Google’s Linux documentation specifically says camera support and hardware acceleration are not supported in that Linux environment. That is a limitation of the documented environment, not a claim that a Chromebook’s camera cannot work in ChromeOS or that every Chromebook lacks hardware acceleration for other uses.

An older Chromebook’s final update date matters
After a Chromebook reaches its final update, it no longer receives ChromeOS or browser updates, including security updates, bug fixes, and new features. That makes the model’s schedule important when buying used or deciding whether an older device is suitable as your primary computer.
Extended updates can remove Android apps on eligible older devices
Eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can opt into extended updates to reach ten years of updates from the platform release date. The choice has a significant tradeoff: opting in removes Android apps and the Play Store, erases on-device Android app data, and cannot be reversed. If you rely on Android apps, read Google’s extended updates guidance before changing the setting.

The Chrome app phaseout affects legacy Chrome apps, not the whole web
Google’s published schedule sets January 2028 as the last ChromeOS release with Chrome app support; devices on the Long-term Support channel can continue through October 2028. This matters if your work depends on legacy Chrome apps. It is not a statement that ordinary websites, web apps, or all Android apps are ending. See Google’s Chrome app end-of-support schedule.
How to decide whether a Chromebook will suit your routine
- List your essential tasks. Identify the programs and services you use regularly, not just occasional extras.
- Confirm app compatibility. Check that each must-have app works in the required form on ChromeOS. Treat a possible Linux alternative as an option to verify, not an assumed substitute.
- Check peripherals. Confirm that essential accessories work with the device and the apps you plan to use.
- Look up the exact model’s update end date. Compare it with how long you expect to keep the computer.
- Compare the hardware for your workload. Consider memory, storage, display, keyboard, ports, and connectivity. Requirements depend on what you do; there is no single specification that makes every Chromebook suitable.
- For eligible pre-2021 devices, weigh the extended-update tradeoff. Decide whether losing Android apps and the Play Store is acceptable before opting in.
A Chromebook is most promising when your everyday work is browser-based, your required apps and peripherals are confirmed to work, and the chosen model has enough remaining update support for your ownership plans. If a specific desktop application or specialist workflow is essential, resolve that compatibility question before making the switch.
