Circle to Search is a Google feature on supported Android phones that lets you search for something visible on your screen without leaving the app you’re using. Long-press the Home button or navigation handle, then circle, highlight, scribble over, or tap the text or image you want to explore.
What Circle to Search does
Instead of switching apps to copy text or describe an image, you select what is on screen and get Google Search results in place. It can help identify an object in a photo or video, find similar products, translate on-screen text, or let you ask a follow-up question about a visual selection. Google introduced the feature in 2024 as a way to search from the screen itself. Google’s launch announcement describes the original experience and rollout.
Circle to Search is a feature, not a separate app you need to install. Google says Android users do not need to download it, though the feature is available only on supported devices. Google’s Android page explains the feature and device eligibility.
How to use Circle to Search
- Open the screen containing the text, image, or video detail you want to look up.
- Touch and hold the Home button or navigation handle to start Circle to Search.
- Circle, highlight, scribble over, or tap the content you want to select.
- Review the search results that appear over the current app. For a visual result, you may be able to add a text follow-up using multisearch.
- Swipe down or use the back gesture to return to the app you started in.
The exact gesture depends on your phone’s navigation setup. Google’s Circle to Search help page provides device and usage guidance.

What you can search or do with it
- Identify something on screen: Select an object in an image or video to search for information about it.
- Find similar products: Select an item shown in content to look for similar products.
- Ask a follow-up about a visual result: Combine a selected image or object with a text query through multisearch.
- Translate on-screen text: Google says scrolling translation works with many types of content, including web pages, messages, and social media. Its help documentation excludes videos and GIFs from this capability.
- Recognize contact details and links: In a January 2025 announcement, Google said Circle to Search was gaining one-tap recognition for phone numbers, email addresses, and URLs, as well as AI Overviews for more visual-search results. Availability can depend on the device and rollout. Google’s announcement describes those updates.
Do all Android phones support it?
No. The core feature and later additions do not have one universal device list. Eligibility varies by phone model and by the specific capability you want to use, so a device supporting basic screen search does not necessarily support every newer feature.
For example, on February 25, 2026, Google announced multi-object visual search that could identify several pieces of an outfit in one image. Google said the feature was starting on Samsung Galaxy S26 series and Pixel 10 devices, with more Android devices to follow. That announcement describes a rollout, not a guarantee that the function is available on every Android phone. Google’s February 2026 announcement gives the rollout details.

Limits to know about
- Some apps may block it: Google says the feature may not work in certain apps, including banking, medical, and other confidential apps.
- Not every kind of content is eligible: Scrolling translation, for instance, does not support videos or GIFs according to Google’s help page.
- Newer features have extra conditions: Google’s documentation for outfit finding and virtual try-on names Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel 10a, and Pixel 11 family models for those steps. Try-on is limited to logged-in users aged 18 or older in Australia, Canada, India, Japan, the UK, and the US, with account history and personalized recommendations enabled. It excludes lingerie, swimming costumes, and accessories, and is unavailable for sponsored Shopping ads. These conditions apply to the documented outfit and try-on experience, not necessarily to basic Circle to Search. See Google’s help page for current details.
How to turn it off or troubleshoot it
If the gesture does not start the feature, first check that your phone is eligible. Google’s support guidance also recommends checking that Google is set as the default digital assistant, screen and app data are enabled, and the Google app is up to date. The same help page provides steps to turn Circle to Search off: Google Circle to Search help.

What Google says about privacy
Circle to Search works with content visible on the phone screen, so it is reasonable to ask what happens when you select something. In a March 18, 2025 interview, Google said it consulted outside privacy and human-computer interaction experts during the product’s design and described device-level access as using only the data needed to provide information. These are Google’s statements about its design process, not an independent privacy audit. Google Public Policy’s interview includes the company’s account.
