Solid-state memory stores data electronically in semiconductor devices, with no moving mechanical parts. It includes both volatile memory, such as SRAM and DRAM, and non-volatile memory, such as flash. So “solid state” describes how the storage is built—not whether it keeps data when the power is off.
What makes memory “solid state”?
Solid-state memory represents binary information through electrical states in semiconductor devices, typically integrated circuits. Unlike a hard disk drive, it does not rely on moving parts such as spinning platters or a mechanical read head.
The term covers more than one kind of memory. Some solid-state memory is temporary working space; other types retain files and code without continuous power. To understand what a particular memory device does, first distinguish volatility from the broader solid-state category.

It depends on the technology. Volatile memory needs power to maintain its current contents. Non-volatile memory retains stored information when power is removed. Both can be solid-state memory.

- Volatile: SRAM and DRAM. Their contents are not preserved when power is removed.
- Non-volatile: Flash memory, including NAND and NOR. It retains stored data without continuous power.
How do SRAM, DRAM, NAND, and NOR differ?
These names refer to different semiconductor memory technologies, with different roles and characteristics.

These are common roles, not rules that make a technology suitable for only one purpose. The useful comparison depends on the memory’s job and its specific design.

Is an SSD the same as solid-state memory?
No. An SSD is a complete storage device that uses solid-state memory to store persistent data. NIST defines an SSD as “A storage device that uses solid-state memory to store persistent data” (NIST SSD glossary).

Many SSDs use NAND flash for data storage. A drive may also include a controller and interface, and can include DRAM cache. NAND flash is one kind of solid-state memory; an SSD is a device built around memory and supporting components. SRAM and DRAM are also solid-state memory, even though they are not, by themselves, SSDs.

How should you compare solid-state memory types?
The right technology depends on whether you need temporary working memory, fast access for a processor, embedded code storage, or persistent files. Compare the dimensions that matter to that use:
- Volatility and retention: Will the data need to remain available after power is removed?
- Performance and access pattern: Is the memory serving cache, main memory, code reads, or bulk storage?
- Density and cost: How much information needs to fit, and what trade-offs does the application allow?
- Endurance and write behavior: For flash, consider the expected write workload and the specifications of the particular device. There is no single endurance figure that applies to every flash product.
What do SLC, MLC, TLC, and QLC mean?
These labels describe how many bits a NAND flash cell encodes: SLC stores one bit per cell, while MLC, TLC, and QLC encode progressively more bits. Storing more bits per cell can increase capacity, but the best choice depends on trade-offs that include performance, cost, endurance, and data retention.

None of these cell types is universally best. For a specific drive or other flash product, use its own specifications and consider how it will be used; the label alone does not establish a complete performance or longevity ranking.

Solid-state memory appears in devices with different storage needs. SRAM is commonly used for processor cache, and DRAM commonly serves as main memory. NAND flash provides persistent storage in SSDs, memory cards, and USB drives; NOR flash is often used for embedded code.
