You can test an app’s email-verification flow in Playwright without creating an inbox account or using an API key by sending the message to a public disposable inbox, then opening it and following its code or link. This works best as a manual or lightweight check: public inboxes are shared, so they are not a private or dependable foundation for automated CI tests.
What Playwright does—and what the inbox does
Playwright automates the application in a browser: it can fill in a signup form, submit it, and later confirm that the account is verified. It does not host an email address or receive the message. You need an external inbox for that step. Mailinator documents public inboxes that can be opened without creating an account; its public inboxes are free and intended for occasional use, quick demos, experiments, and non-sensitive testing (Mailinator Public Mailbox; Mailinator).
Run a no-signup verification check
- Choose a disposable test address. Use an address in a public inbox service that accepts mail without signup. For the documented Mailinator flow, choose an inbox name and use its corresponding public address. Your application may block known disposable-mail domains, and acceptance is not guaranteed across services.
- Submit the app’s normal signup flow in Playwright. Enter the test address in the application and submit the form. The application sends the verification message; Playwright only performs the browser interactions.
- Open the public inbox separately. Navigate to the provider’s public inbox page and open the inbox by name. Check that the message matches the expected sender or subject, then inspect whether it contains the expected verification code or link. The provider’s page is useful for a quick check, but its interface is not a universal Playwright selector contract.
- Complete verification in the app. If the email contains a code, enter it in the app. If it contains a link, open it in the test browser. Assert the application’s verified state—for example, a confirmation message or a change in the account status visible in the UI.
Protect data in a public inbox
Mailinator warns that public inboxes and messages are readable and deletable by anyone. Use only throwaway test identities and data; do not send production credentials, customer information, private tokens, or any message containing information that must remain confidential (Mailinator Public Mailbox).
Public messages auto-delete after a few hours, and the service may impose limits or filter messages. That makes a public inbox convenient for a quick check, but unsuitable as a durable record or isolated test fixture. Do not assume a particular delivery time or retention period beyond the provider’s stated policy.

When a public inbox is not enough
A repeatable automated test needs a reliable way to retrieve the message programmatically. Mailinator’s Playwright guide describes an API-based pattern: trigger the email, poll for delivery, extract the code or link, and return it to the application. The guide, dated September 8, 2026, recommends using a unique address per test to reduce collisions when tests run in parallel; it suggests combining a worker index, timestamp, and random suffix (Mailinator’s Playwright guide).
That is a different setup from opening a free public inbox: API access and private inboxes are the more appropriate direction for automated runs that need privacy and repeatability. Mailinator’s public-mailbox documentation recommends private mailboxes when privacy, API automation, or CI/CD access is needed. Mailosaur is another documented API-backed option, but its quickstart requires an account or free trial and an API key, so it does not meet the no-signup/no-key constraint (Mailosaur quickstart; Mailosaur Playwright documentation).

Use polling, not a fixed sleep
For API-driven automation, poll for the expected message rather than sleeping for a fixed interval and hoping delivery has completed. Match the expected sender or subject, and set a clear timeout that reports which message the test was waiting for. A unique address for each test helps avoid collisions between parallel runs. These are practices described in Mailinator’s vendor-authored guide, not a guarantee of delivery speed or performance.

Troubleshoot a missing message
- The address is rejected: The application may block disposable-email domains. Try an address the application accepts; do not assume every public inbox provider will work.
- No message appears: Confirm that signup completed and the application showed that it sent a verification email. Check the inbox again, but do not rely on an exact delivery-time promise.
- The message disappears: Public inboxes are shared and messages can be deleted by others; their contents are not a dependable test fixture.
- Parallel tests interfere: Shared public inboxes can cause collisions. Move to programmatic inbox retrieval with unique addresses per test for repeatable automation.
