On a Samsung Galaxy S22, a message notification sound is separate from your call ringtone. To change the default alert, go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound. For a more specific tone, change an app’s notification category—or, in Samsung Messages, set a sound for an individual conversation.
Choose how widely the sound change should apply
| Setting | What it changes | Where to set it |
|---|---|---|
| Default notification sound | The general sound used for notification alerts | Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound |
| App or notification category | The sound for a particular app event or category | Settings > Notifications > App notifications |
| Samsung Messages conversation | The sound for one conversation | Messages > conversation > More options > Notification sound |
The available labels and controls can vary with the One UI version, carrier, network, and messaging app. Samsung’s sound settings guide and message-tone guidance distinguish notification alerts from call ringtones; changing a ringtone alone may not change message alerts.
Change the default notification sound
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds and vibration.
- Tap Notification sound.
- Preview a tone and select it, then return to apply the choice.
This changes the general notification alert, not necessarily a tone configured separately for a specific app category or Samsung Messages conversation.
Set a sound for one app or notification category
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Select the app whose alert you want to customize.
- Open Notification categories, then choose the relevant category.
- Confirm Allow notifications is on and the notification type is set to Alert.
- Choose the available sound option and select a tone.
Samsung’s One UI notification guide documents this category-level route. The exact options may differ on an S22 depending on its software, carrier, and network, and not every app exposes the same categories.
#1 Best Overall
- The S22 uses a flat (non‑curved) 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 120 Hz refresh that dynamically adjusts between 48 – 120 Hz depending on content — which means smoother scrolling and better battery efficiency when high refresh isn’t needed.
- Its main rear camera features a 50 MP sensor with what Samsung calls “Tetra‑binning,” delivering stronger detail in bright light and surprisingly good low‑light photos compared to many older flagships.
- The build quality is designed to feel premium and durable: it uses an Armor Aluminum frame combined with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on front and back, which gives better scratch and drop resistance — nice if you want a relatively compact but rugged flagship.
- For video content and editing, the S22 supports 8K recording — rare for a “smaller” flagship. That means you can shoot very high-resolution video, useful if you care about future‑proofing footage or cropping/editing later.
- The phone strikes a balance of compactness and performance — in a world of increasingly large phones, the S22 remains fairly pocket‑friendly while still packing the 4 nm flagship‑class chipset (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 depending on region) for smooth daily performance.
Set a tone for one Samsung Messages conversation
- Open Messages and open the conversation.
- Tap More options (the three vertical dots).
- Tap Notification sound and choose a tone.
This changes the selected conversation rather than the phone’s general alert. Samsung notes that message notification settings may vary based on carrier and whether service is active; see its Messages support instructions.

For an app notification, Samsung’s regional guidance says to place the audio file in the phone’s internal Notifications folder, then select it from that app category’s sound options. You can use My Files to copy the file into the folder. The exact file-picker path can differ on the S22 by software version; follow the available sound option in the category settings. See Samsung’s app notification sound instructions.

- This pre-owned product has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon qualified vendors.
- This product is in "Excellent condition". The screen and body show no signs of cosmetic damage visible from 12 inches away.
- This product will have a battery that exceeds 80% capacity relative to new.
Samsung’s UK guidance for ringtone files lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC, and says M4A files need conversion. That guidance is about ringtones, so it does not establish that every format works identically in every S22 notification picker. It also says streaming-service tracks cannot be selected as ringtone files; a ringtone file rule should not be assumed to describe every notification workflow. See Samsung’s audio-file guidance.

If the notification is silent or the option is missing
- The app or category is missing: Check the app’s notification settings. Available categories and features can vary by device, carrier, and network, as Samsung explains in its One UI notification guide.
- A tone is selected but no alert is audible: Confirm that notifications are allowed and that the category is set to Alert. Then check the phone’s sound mode and notification volume; Samsung documents Sound, Vibrate, and Mute modes and a separate notification-volume control in its sound settings guide.
- Only one chat should sound differently: Use that conversation’s Notification sound setting in Samsung Messages instead of changing the default alert.
