If your VIZIO TV buffers, first check whether the problem is limited to one app or affects several apps and other devices on your Wi-Fi. A single-app problem points toward that service or its compatibility; buffering across devices is more likely to involve your home network or internet connection. Work through these checks before assuming the TV is defective or buying equipment.
1. Find out whether one app or the whole connection is affected
Try a different streaming app on the TV. If possible, also stream on a phone or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi. This comparison is a diagnostic clue, not a definitive test:
- Only one app buffers: Check whether the service is having a problem, whether its app is current, and whether your VIZIO model supports it.
- Several apps buffer on the TV, but other devices work: Focus on the TV’s connection, software, or app platform.
- Other devices also struggle: Investigate Wi-Fi coverage, the modem or router, or your internet provider.
Support varies by service. For example, Hulu says its app supports VIZIO Smart TV models released in 2016 or later and advises updating the TV and app. That guidance applies to Hulu, not to every streaming service. See Hulu’s supported VIZIO model list.
2. Check connection performance at the TV
If the app offers a network or connection test, run it on the TV. A speed result can help identify a slow connection, but one test cannot show whether the connection will remain stable throughout a live stream. Netflix recommends comparing your connection with its current service recommendations; if performance is inadequate, contact your internet provider. See Netflix’s buffering troubleshooting steps.

Do not rely on VIZIO’s older FAQ as a current speed threshold. It says that streaming requires a stable high-speed connection and gives a 1.5 Mbps recommendation, while also noting that some apps and HD video may need more. The document’s publication year is not established, so that figure should not be treated as current guidance.
3. Fully restart the VIZIO TV
A complete restart can clear a temporary device state. Netflix’s general TV guidance is to turn the device off, unplug it when possible, wait 15 seconds, then reconnect and try streaming again. Exact power controls and menu names differ among VIZIO generations. If you use a menu restart, confirm the path in your model’s manual or on VIZIO support rather than assuming every TV has the same options. There is also a narrow, model-specific exception: VIZIO’s April 2025 Google Cast notice describes an issue affecting certain 2016–2020 models and gives the path All Settings > Admin & Privacy > Restart TV. Use that notice only if your TV and symptoms match the issue it describes; it is not a universal buffering fix. See VIZIO’s Google Cast update.

4. Restart the modem and router
If multiple services or devices are affected, restart the home network equipment. Netflix’s guidance is to unplug both the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, wait for them to come back online, then retry the TV. Allow time for the devices to re-establish the connection before judging the result. Follow Netflix’s buffering troubleshooting steps.

5. Improve Wi-Fi where the TV is installed
A connection can be weaker or less stable at the TV than beside the router. Netflix suggests moving the router and device closer, avoiding nearby wireless devices and appliances, and placing the router in an open location off the floor. Make one change at a time and test the stream again.
Consider a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system only if the TV’s room has weak coverage and better router placement has not solved it. These devices can help with coverage; they do not resolve an internet-provider outage or an inadequate internet connection.

6. Check software and app compatibility, then consider another player
Install available TV software and app updates if your model permits. VIZIO app platforms and menus differ by generation, so use the instructions for your exact model in its manual or on VIZIO support. Do not assume an app can be updated or removed through the same menu on every VIZIO TV.
If one app remains the only problem after the connection and updates check out, confirm directly with the service that it supports your model. If the built-in app platform is the limitation, an external HDMI streaming player may be a workaround. Before choosing one, check that it supports the service you want and works with the TV’s HDMI input. Netflix describes using its service on VIZIO devices at Netflix on your Vizio TV or Blu-ray player and includes trying another device among its troubleshooting options.

An external player will not repair weak Wi-Fi, a service outage, or a slow internet connection. If those are the underlying problem, address the connection first.
Before connecting by Ethernet, check the TV’s model
Do not assume a VIZIO TV has a wired network port. The model specifications differ: VIZIO lists no Ethernet for the VQD50M-0809, while the M706-G3 lists Ethernet. Check your exact model’s specifications before buying or running a cable.
