I built NodePilot because I wanted to modernize the visual-runbook approach I valued in Microsoft System Center Orchestrator—not replace it with a different kind of automation. I liked connecting activities, passing data between them, and running automation centrally. What frustrated me was the age and operational weight of the experience around those workflows. NodePilot is my attempt to keep the useful model while giving it a more modern foundation.
I’m Florian Kemper, and my perspective comes from working in Windows enterprise environments and using Orchestrator. The criticisms below are my experience, not an independent product comparison. NodePilot is an open-source project whose capabilities are described by its maintainers, and it has not yet had extensive real-world testing.
What I valued in System Center Orchestrator
Orchestrator lets users connect activities into runbooks, pass data between steps, and automate infrastructure. In my work, the visual workflow was the part that made the model compelling: I could see how activities connected, use published data later in a runbook, and keep execution in a central place.
My objection was not that Orchestrator was on-premises or Windows-focused. Those characteristics were part of why it remained useful to me. As I put it, “The problem for me was never that it is on-premises or focused on Windows.” The difficulty was the product experience and the operational effort I associated with its components, installation, migration, troubleshooting, patching, and compatibility.

Those are personal observations, not verified findings about every Orchestrator installation. Different teams may have different operating needs, existing investments, or reasons to keep their current setup.
Why I started building NodePilot
I wanted to preserve the parts of Orchestrator I liked: visual workflows, centrally managed execution, Windows automation, PowerShell as a first-class option, reusable activities, and data passing between workflow steps. Better programming tools and the arrival of AI-assisted tools made it more practical for me to begin building a modern version of that general idea.
NodePilot is therefore not an attempt to argue that every team should leave Orchestrator. It is a project shaped by one user’s wish to work with the same visual-runbook concept on a newer foundation.

What NodePilot describes today
The NodePilot repository presents it as agentless Windows workflow orchestration: users design, schedule, debug, and observe multi-step automation in a browser. The described engine runs PowerShell on remote Windows machines over WinRM, without installing agents on those target machines. These are project-maintainer descriptions, not independently tested results.
Workflow design and execution
The project describes a visual designer, custom activities, sub-workflows, parallel execution, step debugging, live status, alerting, version snapshots, backup and export, and CLI and API access. The article describes activities for PowerShell, REST, SQL, WMI, the registry, files, Windows services, and LLMs. Triggers include schedules, webhooks, file watchers, and Windows Event Log events.
The repository currently reports 27 activity types and six triggers. These are NodePilot feature counts, not independent benchmarks or measures of how much of a particular organization’s automation it can replace.

Technology and deployment
The project identifies a .NET 10 backend, a React frontend, and PostgreSQL or SQL Server as database options. Its documented deployment paths are a Windows 11 desktop app, a Windows Server service, and installation from source. NodePilot is Windows-only by design, with WinRM and DPAPI in its operating model.

NodePilot is licensed under Apache License 2.0, and the project describes support as community-based. It says there is no vendor behind the project and no support contract. An organization evaluating it should account for who will maintain, operate, and support the system over time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What an Orchestrator user should check before migrating
NodePilot says it can import .ois_export files from System Center Orchestrator 2012, 2016, and 2019. The repository describes mapping around forty activity types and preserving links, conditions, global variables, the folder tree, and canvas layout. That is a description of intended import behavior, not proof that a given runbook will migrate without work.
Rank #4
- Powerful Performance: Intel Core i5 Hexa Core processor for reliable multitasking and smooth computing.
- Fast & Efficient: 16GB DDR4 RAM and 250GB SSD for quick startup and performance.
- Windows 11 Pro: Modern operating system with professional-grade tools and enhanced security.
- Compact Design: Space-saving mini chassis fits neatly on or under your desk.
- Renewed Quality: Professionally tested and renewed to perform like new; may show minor cosmetic wear.
Activities that cannot be mapped become disabled placeholders and are itemized in an import report. Imported workflows arrive as disabled drafts for review. Credentials are not reconstructed because the source system encrypts them. As a result, importing a file is only one step in a migration: teams still need to inventory workflows, inspect unmapped activities, recreate credentials, and test behavior in their target environment.
I have not yet seen extensive real-world testing of NodePilot and am asking existing Orchestrator users to try imports with their own workflows. The repository’s import documentation explains the project’s approach; it does not establish compatibility across customer environments or prove production readiness.
How to assess whether it fits your environment
A useful evaluation is less about whether two tools share the word “orchestrator” and more about whether the operational model fits your environment. Compare your current Orchestrator installation with NodePilot against the requirements that matter to your team:
- Authoring: Would browser-based visual editing help your users, or do they depend on another way of creating and maintaining runbooks?
- Targets and remoting: Does a Windows-only, WinRM-based model without target agents match your machines, network boundaries, and policies?
- Migration: Which activities and workflow behaviors need to survive import, and how will you handle disabled placeholders, review, and credential recreation?
- Operations: Can your team meet the deployment and database requirements, and does the described debugging, versioning, and observability meet its needs?
- Governance and support: What audit and security controls do you require, and who will own maintenance when support is community-based?
The repository frames browser authoring, debugging and versioning, and the open-source license as strengths. Those are the project’s claims; teams should validate them against their own workflows and governance requirements rather than treat them as a substitute for an evaluation.
Why this is a focused alternative, not a universal workflow engine
NodePilot is deliberately centered on Windows automation and visual runbooks, including import from Orchestrator. A different category of self-hosted workflow tool may make different trade-offs. For example, Dagu describes itself as a workflow engine built around declarative YAML, with a single-binary setup and support for Linux, macOS, and Windows. That is an adjacent model, not evidence that it is a direct replacement for NodePilot or Orchestrator.
