To share a file in Slack, open the channel or direct message where it belongs, attach the file from the conversation composer, and send it. On desktop you can drag up to 10 files into the message field at once; on mobile, use the plus button. Slack’s Help Center says files can be up to 1 GB. If the file should remain in Google Drive, OneDrive, or SharePoint, share it through that service’s Slack integration instead.
Choose the right conversation and sharing method
Post a project file in the channel dedicated to that project so colleagues can find it alongside related discussion. Use a direct message when the audience should be limited to specific people. Before attaching anything, consider where the authoritative copy should live:
- Upload to Slack when you want the file attached to the conversation.
- Share through a cloud integration when the original should remain in Google Drive, OneDrive, or SharePoint.
The conversation determines who can see the Slack message; cloud-provider permissions separately determine who can open the underlying document.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUpload a file from your device
On desktop
- Open the channel or direct message where you want to share the file.
- Drag up to 10 files into the message field, or click the plus icon and choose the file-upload option.
- Add a message explaining what the file is or what recipients should do with it, if useful.
- Send the message.
On mobile
- Open the channel or direct message.
- Tap the plus icon, then select a recent file or choose Upload file.
- Add context if needed, then tap the send control.
Slack’s Help Center states that files up to 1 GB can be added. The limit and interface labels are Slack’s published guidance and may change.

Share a Slack file with someone outside Slack
Slack documents external file links as a paid-plan feature, and workspace owners or administrators can control whether public file sharing is available. In a public channel, any member can create an external link; in a private channel, only the uploader can. Open the file’s Share menu and look for the external-link option. If it is unavailable, the plan, channel privacy, uploader, or workspace settings may explain why. See Slack’s guidance on sharing files externally and public file-sharing settings.
When a file cannot be shared or found
- Upload is rejected: Check the file size; Slack’s published maximum is 1 GB. Slack says uploaded files are scanned for viruses and other malware and will not be uploaded if malware is detected.
- Sharing is restricted in Slack Connect: Uploading or sharing may be restricted in Slack Connect conversations, and some file types cannot be added. Ask a workspace owner or administrator if the restriction is unexpected.
- External link is missing: External links depend on a paid plan and workspace settings. Channel privacy and who uploaded the file also affect who can create one.
- A cloud file opens for some people but not others: Check the file’s permissions in Google Drive, OneDrive, or SharePoint; conversation membership alone does not grant access to the hosted document.
- An older file is no longer visible in a free workspace: Slack says free workspaces can view and search messages and files from the last 90 days. When that visibility limit is reached, older items are hidden to make room for new ones; items more than one year old are permanently deleted. See Slack’s free-workspace usage limits.
