The Resident Evil films have proved durable at the box office, but that does not establish that the original set an artistic standard for every video game adaptation. The more revealing question is what the newly released 2026 film carries from the games—and what its approach suggests about the crowded slate of adaptations still ahead.
Did Resident Evil set the standard for video game movies?
It made a substantial commercial mark and grew into a long-running film franchise. Capcom says the games began in 1996 and the first major motion picture arrived in 2002. In a 2020 announcement, the company reported that the first film grossed $102 million worldwide, calling it an “extraordinary hit among video game film adaptations.” That description is Capcom’s promotional characterization; the gross is evidence of commercial reach, not a verdict on artistic influence.
Capcom also reported that six films made through 2016 had earned $1.2 billion worldwide. That figure covers those six films, not every installment released afterward: The Atlantic described seven earlier films before the 2026 release. Neither total proves that the first film caused the current adaptation boom or established a creative formula others followed.
The franchise’s longevity is clearer than any claim that it “set the bar.” The 2026 film’s domestic opening weekend was reported by The Atlantic as upwards of $60 million. That is an early U.S. opening result, not a final worldwide gross, and it should not be compared directly with lifetime totals.

What makes the 2026 film different?
Sony’s synopsis follows Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams, through a catastrophic night. Released theatrically on September 18, 2026, the film tells an original survival story rather than retelling a familiar game plot.
Director and co-writer Zach Cregger said he wanted the film to sit alongside the games. “I wanted to do a movie that was following a character from point A to point B, because that’s what those games do so well,” he told PlayStation.Blog. He added: “So I wanted to tell a story that could take place in the Resident Evil world, but wasn’t telling a story that the games had already told.” These are Cregger’s stated intentions, not an independent critical judgment by the blog.

- Witness the beginning of Evil.Raccoon City, which was once a booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, is now a dying Midwestern town. The company?s exodus left the city a wasteland?with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, a group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.
He places the film in the world of Resident Evil 2, during a Raccoon City crisis, but follows a different person rather than repeating Leon’s story. Cregger described translating play into screen suspense through a vulnerable protagonist, limited ammunition, escalating weapons, changing environments, injuries, and recognizable healing items. He recalled resource conservation and slow, deliberate movement as central to his experience of Resident Evil 2.
The adaptation choice is useful to consider across several separate questions:
- Story fidelity: A film can retell a game’s plot, follow a new story within its world, or borrow only a premise. Cregger chose a new protagonist and story.
- Gameplay translation: Instead of reproducing player control, the film makes pressures such as scarce ammunition, injury, and changing equipment visible to an audience.
- Tone and audience: The Atlantic contrasts the earlier films’ heavy weapons, supernatural action, and large-scale spectacle with this film’s civilian protagonist and more vulnerable survival emphasis.
- Commercial evidence: Opening-weekend figures and lifetime worldwide totals measure different things; neither alone establishes creative quality or a universal adaptation formula.

- In San Francisco, Jill Valentine is dealing with a zombie outbreak, Leon Kennedy is tracking a kidnapped DARPA scientist and Claire Redfield is investigating a monstrous fish. Joined by Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers, they discover the trail of clues from their separate cases all converge on Alcatraz Island, where a new evil awaits their arrival.
How to judge the next wave of adaptations
Instead of asking whether a film is faithful in only one sense, look at what it carries over and what it changes. A new plot may preserve a recognizable world; a film may translate a mechanic such as resource management without reproducing the game’s events. Tone and intended audience matter, too. Box-office claims are most useful when their scope is explicit—domestic or worldwide, opening or lifetime, and reported by whom.
Resident Evil’s commercial history makes it a prominent reference point, but it cannot tell us in advance which upcoming adaptation will work. The next slate will test different combinations of story fidelity, gameplay-inspired tension, recognizable settings, and audience reach.
