A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is still an engineer who writes and ships software, but the work is organized around solving a particular customer’s problem and getting a system working in that customer’s environment. Software engineering is more often organized around building and evolving an application, platform, or other software system. The distinction is about the work’s center of gravity—not whether one role codes and the other does not.

What does a forward deployed engineer do?

In the OpenAI job postings reviewed here, FDEs work from customer discovery through technical scoping, system design, implementation, production rollout, and adoption. They collaborate directly with customer teams, deliver solutions in customer environments, and bring lessons from those deployments back to product and research teams. OpenAI describes its team as operating “at the intersection of customer delivery and core platform development” (OpenAI’s Seattle FDE posting).

That is one employer’s definition, not a universal standard for every job using the FDE title. The posting calls for full-stack, production-grade coding; an FDE role can therefore involve substantial hands-on engineering alongside customer conversations and delivery responsibilities. The actual job description should clarify who owns the code, deployment, and production outcome.

How does an FDE role compare with software engineering?

Software developers also start from user needs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes developers as analyzing users’ needs, designing and developing software, planning how components fit together, testing and maintaining software, and documenting it. So customer awareness is not exclusive to FDE work, and direct customer contact alone does not draw a clean boundary.

Dimension Forward deployed engineer Software engineer or developer
Work is organized around A particular customer’s workflow or business problem in the cited OpenAI postings. Software applications or systems designed around users’ needs; these may be shared products or internal systems.
Customer contact Direct, ongoing work with customer engineering, operational, or domain teams is explicit in the cited postings. Developers analyze user needs and may explain software to nontechnical users; the BLS description does not set a fixed level of direct customer contact.
Typical engineering work Discovery, scoping, architecture, implementation, evaluation, production rollout, adoption, and feedback from deployments. Needs analysis, design, development, planning system components, testing, maintenance, and documentation.
Delivery ownership The cited OpenAI role assigns end-to-end technical delivery across deployments. Developers contribute to creating and maintaining software; the BLS says software engineers may plan system requirements, scope, and order of work.
Feedback loop Deployment observations may inform product and research roadmaps in the cited OpenAI role. Developers work with stakeholders and receive feedback; that feedback loop is not unique to FDEs.
Travel and location Varies by employer and assignment. The reviewed OpenAI openings specify hybrid work and travel up to 50%. The BLS says most developers and related workers work full time; its profile does not establish an industry-wide remote-work or travel norm.

The comparison reflects the cited OpenAI postings and the BLS occupational profile, not a universal taxonomy. An FDE may build reusable platform capabilities, while a software engineer may work directly with customers. Team structure and the responsibilities in the specific posting matter more than the title.

What skills and qualifications do the roles call for?

FDE skills in the cited OpenAI posting

The reviewed Seattle opening asks for five or more years of engineering or technical-deployment experience that includes customer-facing work; experience delivering complex systems; production-grade frontend and backend coding; and clear communication with engineering, product, and customer stakeholders. Those are requirements for that posting, not a standard entry threshold for all FDE roles.

The practical emphasis is on combining engineering execution with customer-facing scoping, integrating systems into customer environments, and owning deployment outcomes. The specific balance depends on the employer and assignment.

Software developer skills in the BLS profile

The BLS lists analytical, communication, creativity, detail, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills for software developers and related workers. It says developers typically need a bachelor’s degree in computer and information technology or a related field, while employer requirements vary. These occupational descriptions are broad and do not prescribe every team’s hiring criteria.

Which role may suit you better?

Consider FDE work if you want to

  • Combine production engineering with customer discovery and frequent collaboration with customer teams.
  • Move between different problems and environments, including situations where requirements are still taking shape.
  • Own delivery through deployment and adoption, rather than focusing only on building a system before handoff.
  • Help turn lessons from customer deployments into reusable product or platform improvements.

Consider a software engineering role if you want to

  • Focus on building and evolving a defined application, platform, or system.
  • Work on software design, implementation, testing, maintenance, and documentation as part of a product or internal engineering team.
  • Work with users and cross-functional teammates without necessarily making customer-site delivery the organizing focus of the job.

Neither path rules out coding, user contact, or cross-functional work. The differences depend on how a team allocates ownership and time, so check the day-to-day expectations rather than relying on the title.

What should you ask before accepting an offer?

Ask the hiring manager for concrete examples of recent projects and how responsibility was divided. Questions that expose the actual operating model include:

  • What share of a typical month is hands-on coding, and what code ships to production?
  • Who sets the scope and decides whether the delivered solution is accepted?
  • How often will I work directly with customer engineers, operators, or executives?
  • Who owns security, reliability, support, and handoff after launch?
  • How much travel is expected, and how often can location requirements change?
  • Are customer-specific integrations maintained as one-off work, or do successful patterns become reusable product capabilities?
  • How is success measured: software quality and platform outcomes, customer adoption, workflow impact, or a combination?

For example, the reviewed OpenAI healthcare posting describes customer-specific evaluation and production handoff, while the Seattle posting emphasizes deployment learning that can influence product and model roadmaps. These are details of those openings, not promises about other FDE jobs.

What do salary and job-growth figures say?

The BLS’s U.S. software developer profile, last modified August 27, 2026, reports a median annual wage of $135,980 for software developers in May 2025. That is an occupational median, not a prediction of any particular offer, and it should not be treated as directly comparable with an FDE salary in a specific company or location.

The same BLS source projects 10% employment growth for software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers combined from 2025 to 2035; it also gives a 10% projection for software developers alone. This is a U.S. projection, not a measure of comparative demand for FDEs. The reviewed primary sources do not establish a directly comparable FDE wage or growth figure.

Which details vary by FDE posting?

Location, travel, and experience requirements are set by the employer and assignment. The reviewed OpenAI Seattle and healthcare openings specify three office days per week and travel up to 50%. Treat those as conditions in those postings, not as standard requirements for every FDE position. Review the current posting and confirm expectations with the hiring team before accepting.
