The Snapdragon 888 and Exynos 2100 are both 2021 flagship mobile platforms built on 5nm processes, but neither is a universal winner. They share a Cortex-X1-based CPU cluster, while their GPUs differ; historical benchmark results show workload-specific trade-offs that can also change with a phone’s cooling, software and settings. For a useful comparison, look beyond peak scores to the exact phone variant and sustained performance.
Specifications: what differs between the chips?
| Specification | Snapdragon 888 | Exynos 2100 |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing process | 5nm, according to Qualcomm | 5nm EUV, according to Samsung |
| CPU | Qualcomm Kryo 680, up to 2.84 GHz; Qualcomm says it is based on Arm Cortex-X1 | One Cortex-X1 up to 2.9 GHz, three Cortex-A78 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores |
| GPU | Adreno 660 | Arm Mali-G78 |
| AI hardware | Hexagon 780-based Qualcomm AI Engine; 26 TOPS | Tri-core NPU; up to 26 TOPS |
| 5G | Identified by Qualcomm as a 5G mobile platform | Integrated 5G modem; Samsung lists sub-6GHz and mmWave |
The specifications come from the vendors’ launch announcements: Samsung’s Exynos 2100 announcement and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 announcement. The shared 5nm generation and similar peak AI figures do not establish equal efficiency or application performance. TOPS is a vendor-specified measure, not a direct comparison of how quickly a particular app’s AI task will run.
Samsung also lists Exynos 2100 support for LPDDR5 memory, UFS 3.1 and UFS 2.1 storage, camera resolutions up to 200MP, video encoding up to 4K UHD at 120fps and decoding up to 8K at 60fps. These are platform capabilities, not a promise that every phone using the chip includes those features. The same applies to modem bands: network compatibility depends on the handset’s implementation and regional model.
What do the CPU benchmarks show?
A February 2021 Notebookcheck report relayed SPECint results credited to Golden Reviewer. In those results, the Snapdragon 888 scored higher on the Cortex-X1 test, while the Exynos 2100 scored higher in the reported mid-core test:
#1 Best Overall
- T-Mobile Branded - UNLOCKED for all GSM Carriers
- Screen Size: 6.2" FHD+ (1080X2400) Dynamic AMOLED 2x, 421 PPI
- Processor: Snapdragon 888, Octa-CoreGold Prime Max 2.8GHz + Gold 2.4GHz + Silver 1.8GHz
- Front Camera: 10 MP AF | Rear Camera: 64 MP
- Operating System: Android 11 (R OS)
| Reported test | Exynos 2100 | Snapdragon 888 |
|---|---|---|
| SPECint X1-core score | 39.61 | 42.78 |
| X1-core performance per watt | 12.38 | 14.07 |
| SPECint mid-core score | 35.71 | 31.84 |
| Mid-core performance per watt | 14.46 | 19.65 |
These are historical results reported by Notebookcheck from Golden Reviewer, not a new or independently replicated test. They illustrate why a single score can mislead: the Exynos result was higher in the cited mid-core performance measure, while the Snapdragon result was higher on the X1 and in both reported performance-per-watt figures. They do not establish which chip is faster in every app or phone.
How do GPU performance and power compare?
The GPUs use different architectures—Adreno 660 in the Snapdragon 888 and Mali-G78 in the Exynos 2100—so results from actual devices and specific graphics tests matter more than the chip names alone.

In its Galaxy S21 Ultra comparison, AnandTech observed peak GPU power of around 8W for both tested chips. In the cited GFXBench T-Rex off-screen throttled result, the Snapdragon 888 test phone was listed at 172.67 FPS and 2.70W. AnandTech reported that performance in the throttled state was nearly the same between the tested phones, with the Snapdragon using 28% less power in that state.

Why can the same chip perform differently in different phones?
A benchmark measures a particular workload on a particular device under particular settings. Cooling design, power limits, software, storage and display configuration can affect the result; sustained workloads can also trigger thermal throttling. Qualcomm says its own launch benchmarks used a Snapdragon 888 reference design and averaged three iterations, and cautions that commercial-device results can vary with performance settings, storage, display refresh rate, software updates and other factors. Samsung likewise says actual Exynos performance may vary by device and user environment.
- Short CPU or GPU runs: useful for a peak result, but they do not show how performance changes as the phone heats up.
- Sustained gaming or rendering: compare repeated or longer runs on the exact phone models, not just platform specifications.
- Efficiency: check power use alongside frame rate or task completion. A higher peak score does not automatically mean better performance per watt.
- Connectivity: confirm the precise phone model and regional SKU for supported 5G bands and other network features.
Which should you choose?
If you are comparing Galaxy S21 Ultra variants, the cited AnandTech GPU observations favor the Snapdragon 888 for power use in the tested throttled state, while the reported SPECint results show the Exynos 2100 can lead in a particular mid-core score. Those findings do not settle every workload or every handset.
Choose by the exact phone and its intended use rather than by the processor label alone. For a used or refurbished Galaxy S21 Ultra, check the model number, region, condition, network compatibility and chipset listed for that specific device. The historical benchmarks do not establish present-day availability or value.
