Press Windows key + M to minimize all open windows that support the Minimize command. This built-in Windows shortcut sends eligible windows to the taskbar; it does not necessarily make the desktop visible if a window cannot be minimized.
How to minimize all windows
Press Windows key + M. On most keyboards, the Windows key has the Windows logo and sits between Ctrl and Alt. Hold it down, press M, then release both keys.
Windows minimizes windows that support the Minimize command. Microsoft lists this shortcut in its Predefined key combinations.

Win+M vs. Win+D: what’s the difference?
| Shortcut | What it does | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Windows key + M | Minimizes all windows that support the Minimize command. | Eligible windows are minimized, but a window that cannot be minimized may remain visible. |
| Windows key + D | Shows the desktop. | Windows that can be minimized are minimized, and Windows raises the desktop in the window stack. A topmost window may still cover it. |
In short, Win+M is about minimizing eligible windows; Win+D is intended to show the desktop. Microsoft engineer Raymond Chen explained the distinction in What is the difference between Minimize All and Show Desktop?.

Other useful window shortcuts
- Windows key + Down Arrow: Minimize the active window.
- Windows key + Home: Minimize or restore all inactive windows.
- Windows key + D: Show the desktop; press it again to return to the previous window arrangement.
