Electric vehicles are grouped by how they get their energy, whether they can be plugged in, and what powers their wheels. In this guide, “EV” is an umbrella term for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), conventional hybrids (HEVs), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs)—but official sources use the term differently. The distinctions that matter most are whether a vehicle plugs in and whether it also carries an engine that burns fuel.
What are the different types of electric vehicles?
The main categories are BEVs, PHEVs, HEVs, and FCEVs. They all involve electric motors, but they differ in how electricity is supplied and whether the vehicle also uses a combustion engine. A mild hybrid is a related category, while a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) is treated as a special case of a PHEV in some UK statistics.
| Type | How it gets energy and drives | Can it plug in? | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| BEV | A rechargeable battery supplies an electric motor; there is no onboard combustion engine for propulsion. | Yes | Battery-only electric propulsion, with no direct tailpipe emissions while operating. |
| PHEV | An electric motor and rechargeable battery work alongside a combustion engine and fuel tank. | Yes | It can drive in electric mode, but combustion operation produces direct emissions. |
| HEV | A combustion engine and electric motor share propulsion; the battery is replenished through regenerative braking and engine operation. | No | It still relies on conventional petroleum fuel. |
| Mild hybrid | A combustion engine drives the vehicle, while a small motor and battery provide assistance. | No | The motor cannot drive the vehicle, according to the Australian government’s description. |
| FCEV | A hydrogen fuel cell generates electricity for an electric motor. | Not by plugging into a grid, as described by the Australian source | Hydrogen is the onboard fuel; the source classifies FCEVs as zero direct-emission vehicles. |
| REEV | An electric motor propels the vehicle; fuel use or mains electricity can charge its battery. | Yes | UK statistical notes treat it as a special case of PHEV, and some PHEV counts include REEVs. |
These descriptions follow the Australian Government’s definitions for electric vehicles and types of electric vehicles, plus the UK Government’s vehicle licensing statistics notes and definitions.

BEV: battery electric vehicle
A BEV stores electricity in a rechargeable battery and uses an electric motor for propulsion. It plugs in to recharge and has no onboard combustion engine for propulsion. “Battery-only” is the useful shorthand: there is no fuel-burning engine to switch to when the battery is depleted.

PHEV: plug-in hybrid electric vehicle
A PHEV combines an externally rechargeable battery and electric motor with a combustion engine and fuel tank. It can operate in electric mode, but when its engine burns fuel it produces direct emissions. The Australian Government describes a PHEV battery as typically having a limited range under 100 km; that is a characterization from that source, not a universal range limit for every PHEV.
HEV: hybrid electric vehicle
A conventional HEV combines an engine, battery, and electric motor, but it does not plug in. Its battery is replenished through regenerative braking and engine operation. Because it still uses conventional petroleum fuel, the presence of an electric motor does not make it a plug-in vehicle.

FCEV: fuel cell electric vehicle
An FCEV uses hydrogen in a fuel cell to generate electricity onboard, which powers an electric motor. It is electric-drive propulsion, but its energy source is hydrogen rather than a battery charged from the grid. The Australian Government describes water vapor as the electrochemical reaction’s only by-product and classifies FCEVs as zero direct-emission vehicles.

Is a hybrid an electric vehicle?
It depends on how the source defines “EV.” Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water includes BEVs, PHEVs, and FCEVs in its EV definition. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center refers broadly to BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs as electric vehicles, while using “plug-in electric vehicles” for BEVs and PHEVs. So an HEV can be called an electric vehicle in broad usage, but it is not a plug-in electric vehicle.

For clarity, identify the category rather than relying on “EV” alone: say “BEV” or “PHEV” when discussing vehicles that plug in, and “HEV” for a conventional hybrid that does not. See the Australian Government’s EV definitions and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center overview.
What is the difference between a BEV and a PHEV?
Both plug in and have an electric motor, but a BEV has battery-only electric propulsion, while a PHEV also carries a combustion engine and fuel tank. That extra engine changes what happens when the battery is not powering the vehicle: a PHEV can use fuel, while a BEV has no onboard combustion engine for propulsion. A PHEV’s direct emissions therefore depend on whether its combustion engine is operating; a BEV has no direct tailpipe emissions while operating.

How should you interpret “zero emissions”?
In these category definitions, “zero emissions” refers to direct emissions from the vehicle while it operates—not the full lifecycle impact. It does not, by itself, account for emissions from vehicle manufacturing or from producing the electricity or hydrogen used to power it. Keep that distinction in mind when comparing propulsion categories.
Where does a range-extended electric vehicle fit?
A REEV is propelled by an electric motor, while its battery can be charged using fuel or mains electricity. UK statistical notes treat it as a special case of PHEV and say PHEV totals sometimes include REEVs. The label and totals can therefore depend on the classification scheme used; when reading vehicle statistics, check whether REEVs are counted separately or included with PHEVs.
