Dynamic drive mapping means connecting a drive or storage location automatically, but the exact behavior depends on the product. In Windows domain administration, it can mean applying network-share mappings through Group Policy Preferences. In Oracle Secure Global Desktop, it means detecting and mounting removable drives attached to a user’s device during a remote session. Cloud Drive Mapper uses the phrase for bringing several cloud locations into one view.
What does dynamic drive mapping mean?
There is no single, universal Windows feature called dynamic drive mapping. The phrase describes different behaviors in different environments. To identify the intended meaning, check three things: the environment, what is being mapped, and what triggers the mapping.
- Environment: a Windows domain, a remote application session, or a cloud-storage product.
- Mapped resource: a network share, a drive on the client device, or a cloud location.
- Trigger: Group Policy application, attachment of a removable device, or product configuration.
Dynamic drive mapping with Windows Group Policy
In Windows domain administration, Drive Maps is a Group Policy Preferences extension for creating and managing network-share mappings for users. Microsoft describes it as a way to “Create dynamic drive mappings to network shares.” The settings are configured in a domain-based Group Policy Object (GPO) at User Configuration > Preferences > Windows Settings > Drive Maps. See Microsoft’s Drive Maps extension documentation.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Create: creates a mapped drive.
- Replace: deletes the existing mapping and recreates it, overwriting its associated settings.
- Update: changes only the settings defined in the preference item.
- Delete: removes the mapping.
These actions are not interchangeable: Replace recreates the mapping, while Update leaves settings not specified by the preference item unchanged. Microsoft’s reference is in its previous-versions documentation collection, so confirm detailed steps against the Windows Server version in use.
Dynamic drive mapping in a remote session
In Oracle Secure Global Desktop (SGD) 5.6, client drive mapping lets users access drives on their client device from applications running on supported application-server platforms. The dynamic behavior applies to removable storage: when a user attaches a device such as a USB memory stick during an active session, SGD detects and mounts it automatically.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
This feature depends on Client Drive Mapping (CDM) being enabled, as well as the relevant user or application access configuration. Oracle says dynamic drive mapping is enabled by default for an SGD array. Newly enabled CDM services affect new sessions, so a change may not apply to a session that is already open. These details are specific to Oracle Secure Global Desktop 5.6’s client-device support.

Cloud Drive Mapper uses “dynamic drive mapping” for pulling multiple cloud locations into a single view. Its documentation lists OneDrive shortcuts, Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint as dynamic drive types. This is Cloud Drive Mapper’s product terminology; it does not define Microsoft Group Policy Drive Maps. See Cloud Drive Mapper’s drives and features documentation.

How to tell which meaning applies
- If the instructions mention a GPO, User Configuration, or network shares, they mean Windows Group Policy Preferences.
- If they mention a remote application session, client-device access, or USB storage, they mean client drive mapping in a remote-session product such as Oracle SGD.
- If they mention OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint, or combining cloud locations, they may be using Cloud Drive Mapper’s product-specific terminology.
