There is no single approval setting shared by every ChatGPT and Codex feature. In ChatGPT, app permissions determine whether supported app reads or changes ask first; in Codex, the configured sandbox sets what the agent can access and the approval policy determines when it must stop for review. The app, account, workspace rules and product surface can all affect what you see.
What determines whether an action needs approval?
Check three layers before assuming an action will proceed or prompt:

- Provider authorization: The connected account determines what information and actions the provider permits.
- App permissions: ChatGPT’s app setting governs whether supported reads or changes ask first. Available choices vary by app, account, connection and workspace. OpenAI’s app-permissions guidance describes the available controls.
- Workspace policy: An organization’s rules can limit access or override a personal preference. In Codex, the configured sandbox and approval policy further determine what the agent can do and when it must request review.
Also consider what the action does. An action that affects another service, exposes sensitive information or is difficult to undo may receive additional safety review, even when a setting otherwise allows it.
Which ChatGPT app actions can ask first?
Depending on the app and your account, ChatGPT may offer permission choices such as Always ask, Allow read actions, Allow low-risk actions and Allow all actions. These are examples, not a universal menu: an app may show only some options, and workspace policy can affect availability.

Always ask means ChatGPT asks before reading app information or making changes, according to OpenAI’s app-permissions guide. With other settings, supported reads or actions may proceed without an approval prompt, subject to provider authorization and workspace rules.
What does an approval prompt show?
For supported actions, ChatGPT may display an approval card identifying the app and proposed action. The available controls can differ. Members of managed workspaces, for example, may not see an Always allow option; actions that need additional safety review may also lack it. An approval card is therefore a request to review that particular action, not a guarantee that you can permanently authorize every future action.

When does Codex ask before acting?
Codex approval behavior depends on the surface you are using—such as CLI, desktop, IDE or cloud—as well as its configured sandbox and approval policy. The following mode descriptions apply to the Codex CLI guidance, not necessarily to every Codex surface.

These distinctions come from OpenAI’s Codex CLI guide. Check the mode and policies for your own surface rather than assuming the CLI labels apply elsewhere.

Sandbox boundary versus approval policy
The sandbox defines technical limits, such as which paths are writable and whether network access is available. The approval policy determines when an action that crosses a boundary must be reviewed. Auto-review may approve some eligible requests, but it does not remove workspace restrictions or eliminate every prompt. OpenAI explains these controls in its Codex approvals and security documentation and sandbox documentation.
Example: full browser access
Full browser CDP access is a sensitive capability: in the documented Codex feature, Codex requests explicit approval before using it to inspect a website. This example illustrates why a generally autonomous mode does not imply that every sensitive action proceeds without a prompt. See OpenAI’s browser documentation.

How can you check or change your settings?
For a connected app, open ChatGPT’s app-permission controls for that connection and review the options shown there. The exact path and available labels can vary, so use OpenAI’s current app-permissions instructions alongside the controls visible in your account. For Codex, identify the surface you use, then inspect its configured sandbox and approval policy; CLI mode names alone do not establish the policy for the desktop, IDE or cloud.

- If an option is missing, the app, account or workspace may not support it, or a workspace administrator may restrict it.
- If an action still prompts after you allowed a class of actions, it may require additional review or fall outside the permitted sandbox.
- If a connected action is unavailable altogether, check provider authorization as well as ChatGPT’s app setting; permission to proceed and authorization to access the provider are separate.
What plugin actions can do
Plugin actions remain subject to the same practical boundaries: the app’s permissions, the provider’s authorization, workspace availability and any approval requirement for the specific action. A saved preference cannot grant access that the provider or workspace does not allow.
