An embedded operating system (OS) is the software platform inside a purpose-built device that manages its hardware and provides services to the software doing the device’s job. It can be based on Linux, use a real-time operating system (RTOS), or follow another design. Some embedded devices run without an OS.
What is an embedded operating system?
An embedded system is a computer built into a larger device or machine to perform one of its functions. When that system has an OS, the OS sits between the hardware and the application software: it manages resources and makes services such as device access available to the software.
Embedded computing appears in many kinds of equipment, including vehicles, traffic lights, televisions, ATMs, cameras, navigation equipment, and industrial controllers. The device’s purpose—not a particular size or operating system—makes its computing system embedded. TechTarget’s definition and examples provide further context.

Embedded Linux
Embedded Linux means using the Linux kernel in a purpose-built device, often configured for its target hardware. It is not a separate “embedded edition” of the kernel. A Linux distribution can add packages, services, and development components around the kernel. This can provide a broad software environment while allowing developers to tailor the system to a device. Canonical explains the distinction between the kernel and a distribution.

Real-time operating systems
An RTOS is designed with attention to predictable timing and task scheduling. It can suit systems where tasks need to respond within defined time constraints. An RTOS may still be useful without a hard real-time deadline; choosing one does not mean the device necessarily has hard real-time requirements. FreeRTOS’s RTOS fundamentals discuss this distinction.
Linux and real-time behavior are not mutually exclusive categories: the Linux kernel has PREEMPT_RT real-time support. Whether a particular system meets its timing requirements depends on its configuration and workload, rather than the label alone.

Other designs
Embedded OS is an umbrella term, not a synonym for Linux or RTOS. For example, the Apache NuttX project describes its system as an RTOS with deterministic behavior.
Do all embedded devices have an operating system?
No. A simple embedded application may run directly on the hardware, an approach commonly called bare metal. A more complex application may benefit from OS services such as task scheduling, communication, drivers, or file management. The appropriate design depends on the device’s hardware and software needs. The embedded operating systems chapter in Peter Marwedel’s Embedded Software covers OS concepts in this context.

How do engineers choose an embedded OS?
The term alone does not identify the best OS for a device. Engineers evaluate the target hardware and workload, including:
- Hardware support: whether the OS and its drivers support the target board and peripherals.
- Resource limits: available memory, processing capacity, storage, and power.
- Timing: whether deadlines exist, and whether they are soft or hard.
- Required services: whether the application needs networking, a filesystem, scheduling, or other OS facilities.
- Development and maintenance: the available tools, software ecosystem, and ability to maintain the system over time.
A Linux-based platform may suit a device that benefits from a broad software environment and can accommodate its resource requirements. An RTOS may fit a constrained application where task scheduling and timing are central. Bare metal can be appropriate when an application can operate directly on the hardware without the services an OS provides. These are design options, not universal recommendations.
